Nowadays, every EPF account holder should have a UAN number, since all EPF related services are now operated online. During EPF account creation, a unique identifier or UAN is generated. A member can have only one UAN account during his service period. All EPF accounts are connected with his UAN. EPF withdrawal, EPF balance check, applying for a loan on your EPF account, etc. are easy due to the UAN. But, to avail of these services, the UAN account must be activated. UAN activation and registration are mandatory.
When employees join the service sector for the first time, they have to get the UAN generated if the company has 20 or more employees. If the UAN has already been assigned to the employee in the previous organisation, he has to furnish the details to the new employer.
Here are the steps the employer has to follow to generate a new UAN for the employee
Step 1: Log in to the EPFO portal using the establishment ID and password
Step 2: In the “Member” section, click on the “Register Individual” tab
Step 3: Enter the employee details such as Aadhaar, PAN, bank details, etc.
Step 4: Approve all the details in the “Approval” section
Step 5: A new UAN is generated by EPFO, and the employer can link the PF account to the UAN of the employee.
Here are the steps to know your UAN
Step 1: Go to the official website of the EPFO member portal.
Step 2: Click on ‘Know your PAN’ option.
Step 3: Click on ‘Request OTP’ once you enter the registered mobile number and captcha code.
Step 4: Enter the OTP and captcha code for verification
Step 5: Enter the following details: Name, date of birth, Aadhaar, PAN, or member ID.
Step 6: Enter the captcha for verification.
Step 7: Click on ‘Show my UAN’ and you can see your UAN.
Before employees activate their UAN, they must know their UAN number, member ID, Aadhaar number, or PAN. Here are the steps to be followed to activate the UAN.
Step 1: Visit the EPFO member portal
Step 2: Next, click on 'Activate UAN'.
Step 3: Enter your UAN, member ID, Aadhaar number, or PAN on the next page.
Step 4: Fill in details such as name, date of birth, mobile number, email ID, and captcha.
Step 5: Once the above details are filled, click on 'Get Authorization Pin'.
Step 6: You will get the PIN on your mobile number that has been registered with the UAN.
Step 7: On the next page, you must enter the OTP, check the 'I Agree' disclaimer checkbox, and click on 'Validate OTP and Activate UAN'.
Step 8: You will get the password details on the registered mobile number
Step 9: Use your UAN, password, and captcha details to log in to the EPFO portal. You can also change the password you received on your registered mobile number.
Step 10: If you forget the password, you will be able to reset the password on the EPFO portal.
Here are the steps to link Aadhaar with UAN
Once you login to your EPF account, you can link your Aadhaar with the UAN number. Here are the steps to link your UAN with Aadhaar:
Step 1: Go to the EPFO member home page and login to your EPF account
Step 2: In the “Manage” section, click on the “KYC” option.
Step 3: Tick the square in front of the Aadhaar and enter your 12 digit Aadhaar number and name.
Step 4: Now, click on the “Save” option
Step 5: Your request will be displayed in “KYC Pending for Approval”
Step 6: After UIDAI confirms your details, your current employer’s name is mentioned in “Approved by Establishment” and “Verified by UIDAI” is specified against your Aadhaar.
You require the following documents to get your Universal account number.
1. Who allocates the UAN?
The employees’ provident fund organization (EPFO) allocates the UAN when an employee subscribes to the EPF services.
2. How can I link my UAN number with the Aadhaar card?
Go to the EPFO e-sewa official portal and log in to the EPF account using your UAN credentials. Under the ‘Manage’ section, search for and click on the Know Your Customer (KYC) option. Then, choose Aadhaar and enter the details. To proceed further, click on save.
3. Why does the Universal Account Number list all the previous member IDs?
The Universal account number consolidates multiple member IDs that were allocated to a single member. This is to help a member view his member IDs. Further, he can check his eligibility for online transfer of PF. However, in the future, members will have to reveal their previous member IDs or UAN to the new employer in Form-11. So, then members need not list these member IDs in the UAN. The linking will be done automatically with the details in the Form-11 document.
