E-Way Bill Registration

An e-Way bill is a document of evidence for transporting goods of value more than Rs 50,000 from one place to another. The e-Way bill portal is integrated with the GST network and the entries for GST returns are auto-populated from the e-Way bills generated. Hence the registered taxpayers and transporters must get registered in the e-Way bill portal.

Who Should Register For E-Way Bill?

  • Consignor or Supplier sending the goods. He generates the e-Way bill for his recipients.
  • Consignee or Customer receiving the goods. He accepts or rejects the e-Way bill generated against his name.
  • Transporters - Handles movement of goods. Generates consolidates and updates vehicle numbers in the e-Way bills.
  • Departmental Officials - Verify the e-Way bills and approve the consignments wherever necessary.

Why Should You Register For an E-Way Bill?

Every GST-registered person who transports goods of value more than Rs 50,000 must generate an e-Way bill. The e-Way bill containing details of the consignor, consignee, goods, and transportation must accompany the goods in transit.

How To Register For E-Way Bill?

For Registered Taxpayers

  • Visit the official e-Way bill portal.
  • On the top menu bar, click on “Registration”.
  • Click on “E-Way Bill Registration”.
  • Provide your Goods and Service Tax Identification Number (GSTIN) and enter the given captcha. Click “Go”.
  • You will be redirected to the e-Way bill registration form,
  • The applicant's name, trade name, address, and mobile number are auto-populated.
  • Click on “Send OTP”, enter the mobile OTP received, and validate.
  • Create a unique User ID and password.
  • The password must have a minimum of 8 characters with a combination of case-sensitive alphanumeric, and symbols.
  • Your login account is created in the e-Way bill portal after the successful validation of details.

For Unregistered Taxpayers

Unregistered taxpayers can generate e-Way bills without creating a login account in the e-Way bill portal. There is no registration per se for unregistered taxpayers in the e-Way bill portal, however, they can generate e-Way bills using the following steps if required.

  • Visit the official e-Way bill portal.
  • Under “Registration” from the top menu, choose “E-Way Bill For Citizens”.
  • Click on “Generate New EWB”.
  • Select the state from which the goods are sent.
  • Enter your name, address, email address, and mobile number, and then click “Send OTP”.
  • Submit the mobile OTP received and click on “Verify OTP”.
  • Click the checkbox for verification and click on “Continue to Bill Generation”.
  • Your e-Way bill is generated.

For Transporters

  • Visit the official e-Way bill portal.
  • On the top menu, click on “Registration”.
  • Click on “Registration For Transporters”.
  • You will see the enrolment application form.
  • Select your STATE of business
  • Provide your legal name as per PAN Card, trade name, and PAN, and validate the details.
  • Click on the type of enrolment. Whether as a warehouse/depot, godown, cold storage, and transport services.
  • Key in your address of the principal place of business.
  • Provide your mobile number and telephone number.
  • Click on the type of premises. Whether it is owned, leased, rented, consent, shared, or others.
  • Give the name of the proprietor or partner or authorised signatory of the company.
  • Provide the mobile number and validate with mobile OTP.
  • Check the availability of the Username. It should have 8 to 15 characters, a combination of alphanumeric and special characters.
  • Enter the password (minimum 8 characters) and confirm by re-entering it.
  • Upload relevant supporting documents for address proof and identity proof in PDF.
  • Click the check box for verification and enter the captcha and save the application.
  • You will get a 15-digit transporter id with login details.
  • You can give your id to the parties using your transport services for entering the transporter details during e-Way bill generation.

3. How to generate an e-Way bill?

You can generate e-Way bills by logging into your e-Way bill portal account. Click on “Generate Now” on the left menu bar and provide the required details

4. What is the validity of an e-Way bill?

An e-Way bill is generally valid for one day and one additional day in certain cases.

5. My e-Way bill generation is blocked. Can I create another user account in the e-Way bill portal?

No. Your e-Way bill registration is linked with your Goods and Service Tax Identification Number. You can create only one account with one GST number.

6. How to update the address details auto-populated during e-Way bill registration?

After creating your account, you can log in to the e-Way bill portal and click on “Update from common portal” and update the relevant details.

7. What is the penalty for transporting goods without an e-Way bill?

You may be penalised with Rs 10,000 or tax evaded whichever is higher. The goods are also likely to be confiscated by tax officials.
