FASTag issuers in India

Introduction

India is known for having multiple queues at toll plazas where cars would wait for their chance to pay toll charges before driving away. The process of making manual payments, with cash or card to be allowed through by toll keepers is generally very slow and could also be time-consuming at times. With this state of affairs, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) decided to roll out a new and innovative technology which allows making toll payments fast and easy. FASTag is a reloadable tag that allows toll charges to be deducted automatically when the car passes through the toll gate.

What is FASTag & When Was it Launched

FASTag is a very easy to use and rechargeable tag that allows deduction of toll charges automatically and helps vehicles to pass through the toll plaza without waiting for any cash payments or manual intervention. FASTag is an ideal solution for people looking to have hassle-free trips, especially on national highways. FASTag is currently available at more than 420 toll plazas across various national as well as state highways. Additional toll plazas are being planned to be brought under the FASTag program in the near future.

FASTag gets linked to a prepaid account in order to deduct applicable toll amount automatically. The tag uses Radio-frequency Identification (RFID) technology and must be affixed on the vehicle's windscreen after the tag account has been activated. The FASTag program allows users to keep adding multiple toll plazas with time and provides cashless experience while travelling across India.

FASTag was initially designed to be a pilot project back in 2014 along the Golden Quadrilateral between Ahmedabad and Mumbai. After its initial success with individual projects, on 19 October 2019, FASTag was made mandatory on all National Highways and non-FASTag users got charged double the toll amount after its launch.

Key Benefits of FASTag

Here are some of the main benefits of FASTag:

  • Cashless Payments – FASTag users can go cashless for most of the toll transactions. With the availability of FASTag, one does not have to wait to get the exact change for cash.
  • Faster Transit – Auto-debit facility of FASTag deducts the exact amount and helps in faster transit through the toll plazas thereby saving a lot of time for the users.
  • Online Recharge – FASTag can easily be recharged online by using Credit Card / Debit Card / NEFT/ RTGS or Net banking.
  • SMS alerts – Users can choose to receive instant SMS alerts on a registered mobile number for toll transactions, low balance, etc.
  • Validity - Any FASTag is generally functional for a period of 5 years.
  • Exclusive FASTag Portal - A customer has the facility to access their statements for their Tag by merely logging on to the FASTag Customer Portal.

Cash Back up to 2.5 percent- Users can avail a cashback of 2.5% on all toll payments using FASTag in the Financial Year 2019-20. The cashback amount for a certain month is credited back to the user's FASTag Account within a week post the said month.

Functioning of FASTag

Step 1: The first step is for users to buy a FASTag for their car. Users can physically buy one at some of the toll plazas across India by carrying an identification document as well as the vehicle registration documents along. FASTags can also be bought from banks or from online portals. Some of the banks currently offering FASTags include HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, State Bank of India, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Axis Bank as well as the Airtel Payments Bank and Paytm Payments Bank. The benefit of buying the FASTag from banks where users have their savings or salary account is that they can pre-link it with the bank account for easier and faster recharge later.

Step 2: As a next step, users need to make payment for the FASTag. Different prices for the FASTag are applicable depending on which vendor they buy it from. If one buys it from Paytm for example, the FASTag will cost approximately Rs. 500. This includes Rs. 100 for the tag, Rs 250 as refundable security deposit and Rs. 150 as the first recharge for the FASTag. The minimum threshold amount for the Paytm issued tag is also Rs. 150. If, however, one decides to buy from HDFC Bank, the tag costs Rs. 400—this includes Rs 100 for the tag, Rs 100 as reissuance fee and Rs 200 as a security deposit. Incidentally, HDFC Bank has Rs. 100 as the minimum threshold for the account to remain active. There are also cash backs for every use. FASTag issuers come up with these offers on a periodic basis and users can make the most of such offers.

Step 3: The last step is to recharge the balance on the FASTag. Users can log in to the payment system of the bank which has issued the FASTag and make the recharge from their bank account. If it has been bought from Paytm, one can recharge using the linked Paytm account and the balance gets deducted every time one passes through a toll plaza on a national highway. Users can also download the ‘My FASTag’ app and recharge their FASTag via the unified payments interface (UPI) there.

Procuring and Recharging FASTag

  • Online FASTags - FASTags can be purchased online from Issuer Banks websites / NHAI website / IHMCL website and will be delivered by courier at the doorstep of the purchaser.
  • Mobile app - MyFASTag is a consumer App that can be downloaded from the App Store for both Android and iOS systems. A consumer can purchase or recharge FASTags on this App. The App also helps to keep track of transactions and provides for online grievance redressal.
  • POS - Users can also visit any of the Point of Sale (POS) locations of the certified issuing banks at Toll Plazas or Banks’ sales offices to get a tag account created. 23 Public and Private sector banks are authorized to issue FASTag. Alternatively, users can reach out to the Issuing Bank Customer Care numbers to identify the closest POS location. Users will need to carry original as well as a copy of your KYC documents at the POS / Sales office location. It is also important to get the vehicle to the POS / Sale office location to purchase the FASTag.
  • Documents required for purchasing FASTag - Since the FAS Tag is linked to an account, KYC documentation would be required as per the KYC policy of the Issuer Bank. Apart from the KYC documentation, users need to submit a Registration Certificate (RC) of the vehicle along with the application for FASTag.

FASTag has unlimited validity - The same FASTag can be used until the tag is legible to the reader and is not tampered with.

How Should FASTag be Attached to a Vehicle?

Here’s an easy walkthrough of how one can stick the FASTag onto the vehicle:

  • Take off the adhesive liner from the front face of the tag
  • Now stick the FASTag (adhesive side glued to the windshield) onto the top middle of the windshield from inside the car, below the rear-view mirror
  • Don’t stick it anywhere near the car’s default RFID (in case the car has one)
  • If the glue is not strong, don’t try to use tape or other adhesives; instead, ask the issuer for a replacement
  • Once affixed, do not try to reposition the FASTag as this may damage the RFID

FAQS

1. Is FASTag compulsory & is FASTag for any particular kind/category of vehicle?

2. Where can you use your SBI FASTag?

FASTag is presently operating at 240+ toll plazas across National Highways. More toll plazas will be brought under the FASTag program in the future. List of toll plazas accepting FASTag can be found on the official FASTag website.

3. How will I get to know if and how much toll has been debited?

The customer will receive an SMS with requisite details to his registered mobile number as soon as the toll transaction takes place. Periodic statement of account may also be obtained on the website of the Issuer Agency after registration by the customer.

4. Do I need to use any specific lane at the toll plaza for FASTag?

A vehicle with FASTag may use any lane at toll plazas by making cash payment. However, the FASTag will work only in the lanes demarcated for FASTag. A vehicle without valid FASTag entering FASTag lane will be charged double the applicable toll amount in cash.

No, FASTag is issued to each vehicle based on KYC documents submitted. If a FASTag for instance bought for one Car is used for a Truck then such FASTag shall get blacklisted resulting into denial of vehicle passage from FASTag lanes on Toll Plazas. FASTag users are advised to desist from such practice.

End Note

A FASTag is essentially a Radio-frequency Identification (RFID) that allows toll booths to easily collect money and users to pay automatically instead of waiting in long queues for cash transactions. Various banks are starting to offer FASTag across the nation in a bid to automate the toll-paying process.
