India is known for having multiple queues at toll plazas where cars would wait for their chance to pay toll charges before driving away. The process of making manual payments, with cash or card to be allowed through by toll keepers is generally very slow and could also be time-consuming at times. With this state of affairs, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) decided to roll out a new and innovative technology which allows making toll payments fast and easy. FASTag is a reloadable tag that allows toll charges to be deducted automatically when the car passes through the toll gate.
FASTag is a very easy to use and rechargeable tag that allows deduction of toll charges automatically and helps vehicles to pass through the toll plaza without waiting for any cash payments or manual intervention. FASTag is an ideal solution for people looking to have hassle-free trips, especially on national highways. FASTag is currently available at more than 420 toll plazas across various national as well as state highways. Additional toll plazas are being planned to be brought under the FASTag program in the near future.
FASTag gets linked to a prepaid account in order to deduct applicable toll amount automatically. The tag uses Radio-frequency Identification (RFID) technology and must be affixed on the vehicle's windscreen after the tag account has been activated. The FASTag program allows users to keep adding multiple toll plazas with time and provides cashless experience while travelling across India.
FASTag was initially designed to be a pilot project back in 2014 along the Golden Quadrilateral between Ahmedabad and Mumbai. After its initial success with individual projects, on 19 October 2019, FASTag was made mandatory on all National Highways and non-FASTag users got charged double the toll amount after its launch.
Here are some of the main benefits of FASTag:
Cash Back up to 2.5 percent- Users can avail a cashback of 2.5% on all toll payments using FASTag in the Financial Year 2019-20. The cashback amount for a certain month is credited back to the user's FASTag Account within a week post the said month.
Step 1: The first step is for users to buy a FASTag for their car. Users can physically buy one at some of the toll plazas across India by carrying an identification document as well as the vehicle registration documents along. FASTags can also be bought from banks or from online portals. Some of the banks currently offering FASTags include HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, State Bank of India, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Axis Bank as well as the Airtel Payments Bank and Paytm Payments Bank. The benefit of buying the FASTag from banks where users have their savings or salary account is that they can pre-link it with the bank account for easier and faster recharge later.
Step 2: As a next step, users need to make payment for the FASTag. Different prices for the FASTag are applicable depending on which vendor they buy it from. If one buys it from Paytm for example, the FASTag will cost approximately Rs. 500. This includes Rs. 100 for the tag, Rs 250 as refundable security deposit and Rs. 150 as the first recharge for the FASTag. The minimum threshold amount for the Paytm issued tag is also Rs. 150. If, however, one decides to buy from HDFC Bank, the tag costs Rs. 400—this includes Rs 100 for the tag, Rs 100 as reissuance fee and Rs 200 as a security deposit. Incidentally, HDFC Bank has Rs. 100 as the minimum threshold for the account to remain active. There are also cash backs for every use. FASTag issuers come up with these offers on a periodic basis and users can make the most of such offers.
Step 3: The last step is to recharge the balance on the FASTag. Users can log in to the payment system of the bank which has issued the FASTag and make the recharge from their bank account. If it has been bought from Paytm, one can recharge using the linked Paytm account and the balance gets deducted every time one passes through a toll plaza on a national highway. Users can also download the ‘My FASTag’ app and recharge their FASTag via the unified payments interface (UPI) there.
FASTag has unlimited validity - The same FASTag can be used until the tag is legible to the reader and is not tampered with.

However, by paying the toll fee in cash a user can drive his vehicle with FASTag through any lane at toll plazas. If a user does not have a valid FASTag, he must avoid entering the FASTag lanes. If a user enters by mistake he will be charged double the applicable toll fee in cash.

KVB FASTag enables Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) at toll plazas across national highways, thus, making travel a smooth one.
