Introduction

GST is the Goods and Service Tax that was implemented in India in 2017. This is a form of indirect tax that was introduced as an alternative to the multiple indirect taxes levied across the country. The major problem with the previous taxation system was that there were multiple indirect taxes and these differed depending on the applicable state laws.

GST was a huge revamp of the indirect tax structure where all the goods and services across the country are taxed under a single tax law that is applicable uniformly across the country. The rates of taxes under the GST tax laws range from NIL rate of tax to 28% being the highest rate of taxation under GST.

The government has also introduced a GST portal that is an online facility where eligible taxpayers can register themselves under the Act as well as file returns or track refunds. The GST portal also offers many services to taxpayers. These services can be availed uniformly across the country depending upon the eligibility of the user.
