The Voter ID Card is an important document for all citizens of India. It allows citizens of voting age to cast their vote and participate in the democratic process of the country.

A Voter ID Card contains information like your name, date of birth, address, the assembly constituency you belong to and the area of polling. Besides allowing one to vote, it also serves as an important identification document as it is verified and issued by the Government.

Voters should keep their Voter ID cards updated with the latest and correct information. The Elections Commission of India has launched the NVSP Portal (The National Voter’s Service Portal) and the Voter Helpline App to provide various online services to the voters of the country.

How can I download my Voter ID Card online?

The Election Commission of India conducts regular surveys around the country to verify the Electoral Roll and include or delete names from the list. If you have attained the age of 18 recently, you can apply for a Voter ID Card using Form-6. Once you have submitted the application with supporting documents, your Voter ID Card is generated and sent to you via post.

In case you have not received your Voter ID or have lost or misplaced it, you can download it from the Election Commission’s website. These are two ways to download your Voter ID Card online:

How can I vote if I don’t have my Voter ID card?

Voter ID Card is an important document that allows the citizens of India to cast their vote. It is issued by the Election Commission of India. In a few cases, the voter might not have his Voter ID Card with him. It might have been lost or misplaced. He could still be waiting for a printed card to reach him by post. However, if his name is in the electoral roll for that election, he can vote by showing other identification documents.

Here is a list of documents they can produce and cast their vote in the polling booth:

  • Passport
  • Driving licence
  • Service identity cards with photograph issued to employees by central/state govt./PSU/public limited company
  • Passbook with photograph issued by a state bank or post office
  • PAN card
  • Smart card issued by RGI under NPR
  • NREGA job card
  • Health Insurance smart card issued under the scheme of Ministry of Labour
  • Pension document with photograph
  • Official identity cards issued to MPs, MLAs, MPs, etc.
  • Aadhaar card

When a person is entitled to vote and has enrolled, an ECI voter slip will be given confirming the name on the list of electors. This slip can act as a voting card, along with a stipulated proof of photo ID, in case one does not have a voter ID card.

At the time of the elections, the Indian Election Commission has made voter identification compulsory to be eligible to vote. You must show your Voter ID Card issued by the ECI or any other documentary proof that the ECI permits. Getting your voter ID card also doesn't mean you'll actually be eligible to vote. The voter should ensure that his or her name is listed on the Electoral Roll for that particular election before he or she can vote.

Voter ID: A Crucial Identification Document for Citizens

India has around 90 crore voters exercising their right to vote in elections across the country. Voter ID acts as an identification document for these voters. The Voter ID card allows citizens of voting age to cast their vote and take part in the democracy of the country.
