How To Register for a New Voter ID Card Online For General Electors?

General electors are ordinary citizens of India who are residing in the country. You should be at least 18 years old to be eligible for voting. For 2024, the Election Commission of India offers online voter registration to Indian citizens within the qualifying dates, i.e. 1 January, 1 April, 1 July, 1 October of the revision year of the electoral roll. Here are the steps to register for a new voter ID card online.

Step 1: Visit the official portal of the election commission.

Step 2: Click on the National Voter’s Service Portal. You will be forwarded to the NVSP website.

Procedure Post Submission

Step 1: Your form will be displayed on the notice board of the electoral registration officer (ERO) for receiving objections. This period is usually one week

Step 3: If there are any objections, then the ERO or assistant electoral registration officer (AERO) will hear the applicant and the objector’s cases.

Verification Process After Submission

  • After submission of the essential documents, the booth level officer will verify whether the address in the address proof document is as per the criteria set by the election commission.
  • The Booth Level officer might be asked to visit your residence to verify the address. Address verification is done to ensure document authenticity.
  • If the officer discovers discrepancies in the address, the application will be cancelled, and the applicant will not get a voter ID. In that case, the individual has to submit a new application.
  • After address verification, your form will be displayed on the notice board of the ERO and is open to receive objections. Any objection can be raised within 1 week.
  • After this period, a decree will be given to include your name in the electoral roll.
  • If there are any objections, then the ERO or assistant ERO will listen to the applicant’s and the objector's cases.
  • If there are no objections, then the individual becomes eligible for a valid voter ID upon completing the verification process successfully.
  • The voter ID is usually delivered by post to the mentioned address or email within 15 to 21 days after the verification process concludes.

How To Get Enrolled For A Voter ID As An NRI?

You can enrol as an overseas voter or NRI elector if

  • You are a citizen of India but are not residing in the country due to employment, education, etc.
  • You have not obtained citizenship in any other country and are qualified to be registered as a voter at the address mentioned in your passport.

Steps to Get Voter ID For An NRI

Step 1: Go to the official portal of the Election Commission of India.

Step 2: Click on the National Voter’s Service Portal. You will be redirected to the NVSP website.

Step 3: Go to the section ‘New registration for overseas(NRI) electors’. Fill out Form 6A if you are a citizen of India and have not acquired citizenship of any other country.

Step 4: Click on ‘Fill Form 6A’. Complete the form online by following the instructions and upload the required documents.

Step 5: Alternatively, you can also download Form 6A from the Election Commission of India website. Fill out Form 6A in 2 copies. Forms can also be obtained free of cost in Indian Missions.

Step 6: The form can be submitted in person or by post. If the application is sent by post, the photocopy of each required document should be duly self-attested.

Step 7: On the other hand, you can also fill out the form in person at the Electoral Registration Officer or Assistant ERO of the constituency. If the application is submitted in person before the ERO, the original passport should be given for verification.

Step 8: After submitting the form, the booth level officer will visit the address specified in your passport and verify the copies of documents.

Step 9: If there is no relative available for the verification of documents, they will be sent for verification to the related Indian Mission.

Step 10: The ERO’s decision will be communicated to you by post on the address and by SMS on the mobile number given in Form 6A. Electoral rolls are also on the Chief Electoral Officer’s portal.

Step 11: The name of the overseas elector is included in a separate section for "Overseas Electors". This is the final section of the roll for each polling station area.

Step 12: You can use Form-8 to rectify things in the electoral roll.

How Can Government Employees Apply For A Voter ID?

A service elector is a citizen of India who can vote under the service category. They are people who are usually posted somewhere else for service or employment. Hence, they may not be available at their residence. The following people constitute the members of the service category.

  • Members of the Central Armed Forces
  • An individual employed and posted outside India under the Government of India.
  • Members of a force which comes under the provisions of the Army Act, 1950.
  • Members of State Armed Police Forces, posted outside the respective state.

Only voter IDs are issued to service voters and not voter ID cards. This is because service voters vote via a proxy or are assigned postal ballots. They don’t have to produce the card at any polling station, so a card is not necessary.

Four forms are available on the official portal of the Election Commission of India. This is according to the category of the service applicant. They are as follows:

  • The Nodal officer should authenticate the form and declaration and sign the verification certificate.

  • Finally, the form will be sent to the NVSP registration officer of your constituency who will process the form.

  • You can check the voter registration status using the reference ID which is a unique number allocated to you. It will be there on the acknowledgement slip obtained upon submitting Form 6.
  • You can also verify the status by going to your area’s electoral registration officer (ERO) and furnishing your name, date of birth, and address.

Step 1: Visit the official website of NVSP

Step 2: Proceed to log in by clicking the ‘Login’ button and entering the details asked for such as mobile number, password, and captcha code.
