How to Change the Name on the Passport Online?

Step 1: Go to the official portal of Passport Seva online.

Step 2: If you are not a current user, register on the portal. Then, log in using your credentials.

Step 3: From the given list of options, select ‘Apply for Fresh PassportRe-issue of Passport

Step 4: On the next page, choose alternative 1 for applying to the online passport.

Step 5: Choose the option “re-issue of the passport” and select the details you want to change in your passport.

Step 6: Fill up all the details that are required to change the name in your passport.

Step 7: Agree to the terms and conditions and save the information provided before proceeding to the next step.

Step 8: Choose the documents that you want to submit as address proof and date of birth proof.

Step 9: Print the application form, pay the required amount, and have the receipt printed

Step 10: Book an appointment according to the availability of the slot.

Step 11: Upload the scanned copies of the documents, and download the receipt finally.

Step 12: Now, visit the passport office on the date of your appointment. Ensure to carry the application receipt and other appropriate documents. The authorities will check everything and dispatch the updated passport to your residential address through email.

How to Change The Name on the Passport Offline?

Step 1: Submit an affidavit with the details of the applicant including the old name, new name, and the reason for changing the name.

Step 2: After completion of this process, the Gazette of India will publish the new name.

Step 3: Publish two advertisements about changing the name in separate newspapers.

Step 4: Go to the Passport Seva Kendra office and submit the application for changing the name on your passport.

Documents Necessary to Change The Name on the Passport

To update the name on a passport following marriage

  • A copy of the passport of the married woman or the passport of her husband.
  • Self-attested copies of the marriage certificate.

To Change the Name on Passport After Divorce

If women want to change their last names after divorce, then the following documents are required

  • Officially certified copy of the divorce decree
  • A legally sworn affidavit or deed poll executed on a non-judicial stamp paper

To Change the Name on Passport After Remarriage

  • Divorce certificate or the husband’s death certificate
  • Passport copy of husband (If available)
  • Self-attested copy of the marriage certificate

Changing the Passport Name For Any Other Reason

If individuals want to change their name on the passport for any other reason, the following documents must be submitted with the application.

  • A sworn affidavit or deed poll on a non-judicial stamp paper.
  • An advertisement in two newspapers concerning the change in name.

FAQs On Name Change Passport:

1. Is police verification necessary for the re-issue of passport?

Police verification is not required in the following cases. If a passport is being renewed before expiry, the individual only has to submit the NOC along with the proof of police verification. Government employees who apply for the passport by sharing their identification certificate via Annexure B do not require police verification.

2. Is the surname mandatory in the passport?

Yes, the surname is required. While applying, you must provide your full name as you want it to be shown on your passport.

3. Is Gazette enough for changing the name in the passport?

The requirements for name change vary across countries. In India, both Gazette notifications and newspaper publications are necessary for changing the name on the passport.

4. How many days will it take for the name to be changed on the passport?

It can take about 3 to 4 weeks to get a new passport on which the name is updated. This excludes holidays and includes only working days.
