As a saviour for passport applicants, there is a Passport Seva Online Portal which allows easy online passport application for new passports or renewal requests.

Here is everything you need to know about the online passport application.

Passport Seva Website

The Ministry of External Affairs in association with Tata Consultancy Services set up the Passport Seva website. By doing so, it set up the right example for any Public-Private Partnership. The Ministry of External Affairs has maintained ownership over sovereign functions such as verification, authorisation, and issuance of a passport. It also has the ownership of core assets such as data and applicant information.

Passport Seva Online portal allows Indian citizens to initiate several tasks related to passport online. Following functions are available on the Passport Seva Online Portal:

  • Application for a new passport
  • Application for renewal of a passport
  • Application for re-issuance of lost or damaged passport
  • Downloading the application form for Police Clearance Certificate
  • Downloading the application form for Surrender Certificate
  • Downloading the application form for Identity Certificate

Passport Seva online portal provides detailed and end-to-end information on documents requirements and process for obtaining documents listed above. Most of the steps can be completed online. In some cases, however, you will need to take a print of the application form, make an appointment booking and visit the nearest Passport Seva Kendra.

How can I register on the Passport Seva website?

Passport is a critical document required for travelling abroad. Apart from being a mandatory travel document, a passport can also be used as a proof of identity and proof of address. For using the facilities available under Passport Seva, it is important to register under Passport Seva Online. A user has to register himself/herself on the Passport Seva portal to avail the various services offered under Passport Seva Login.

Here are the detailed steps to follow while doing Passport Seva Registration: –

  • Visit the official passport Seva website
  • On the left side of the webpage, you will see a button with an orange colour for “New User”? Register now. You will have to click on the related link.
  • You will then see a form which has to be filled with the required details.
  • Ensure that the radio button shows “Passport Office.”
  • Choose the nearest passport office within your city from options available in the drop-down menu.
  • Next, provide your details as required on the screen. Make sure to fill in all the required data in the relevant fields.
  • Now you will have to choose a login id and password. Make sure these are set as per terms and conditions stated on the portal. You will have to re-enter the password for confirmation.
  • Select a hint question and give your answer. This will allow you to retrieve your details in case you lose or forget your login credentials.
  • Type the captcha code as seen on the screen and select the option to “Register”.
  • Your account will now be created and you can log-in with the available credentials.
  • Proceed to Passport Seva login and use the services offered by the Passport Seva office.

What are the steps to login to the passport seva website?

Passport Seva login offers all the options needed to obtain a new passport or renew an existing passport. Here are the steps for the same:

  • Visit the official passport Seva website
  • On the left side of the screen, you will see a green coloured button stating “Existing User”? Login. Click on this link.
  • You will be asked to enter your User Id and password as a next step. You must enter the same set of details as obtained post completion of the registration process. Next, you can choose from the below-mentioned four options as they appear on your screen:
    • Fresh Passport/Passport Reissue
    • Identity Certificate
    • Police Clearance Certificate
    • Diplomatic Passport/Official Passport
  • Choose the relevant option, i.e. Fresh passport/Passport Reissue.
  • Choose the option “Normal” in the next step and proceed further.
  • You can then download the form and fill it manually. You will have to then upload it or complete the form filling online, depending on your comfort.
  • Whichever option you choose, ensure that you fill the specific details that are mentioned in all your documents.
  • You will then have to verify your details and submit the same to complete the process.
  • You will be redirected to a new page where you can see all the information you saved through submitted applications. Select the option to view the same.
  • Choose your application and select the link “Pay and Schedule Appointment”.
  • Choose Online payment as the option and click on “Next”. At this stage, you can opt to generate an offline challan and make the payment in cash at a nearby SBI branch. The bank takes up to two days to verify and update the payment status. (Challan remains valid for 85 days starting from the date it is generated)
  • You can then see a list of all the Passport Seva Kendras near you. It will also show you the earliest available time slot to book an appointment.
  • Choose the Passport Seva Kendra and the appointment time slot comfortable for you.
  • After you click on the option “Pay and Book Appointment”, you will be redirected to the payment gateway. Here you can make the payment and complete the payment process.
  • After completing the payment, you will be redirected to the page for booking your appointment.
  • Ensure to take a printout of the application form. This has to be carried along with other original documents while visiting the Passport Seva Kendra as per the scheduled date and time.
  • After detailed verification by the officer verifies and acceptance of the application form combined with the documents, you can begin tracking your application status with the help of the ARN (Application Reference Number).

Make sure to visit the Passport Seva Kendra as per the scheduled date and time. Failure to do so may result in repetition of the entire process on the Passport Seva Online Portal.

Can I apply for an ordinary passport online?

You can easily apply for an ordinary passport online. As a first step, you should register through the Passport Seva Online Portal. (Begin by clicking on the ‘Register Now’ link available on the Home Page).

  • After registration, log in to the Passport Seva Online Portal by using the registered Login Id and password credentials.
  • Click on “Apply for Fresh Passport/Re-issue of Passport” link. 
  • Enter all the required details in the form and click on submit. 
  • Click on the “Pay and Schedule Appointment” link within the “View Saved/Submitted Applications” screen for scheduling an appointment. Online Payment is now mandatory for making appointment bookings at all Passport Seva Kendras/Passport Offices. You can make an online payment using one of the following modes: Credit/Debit Card (MasterCard and Visa) Internet Banking (State Bank of India (SBI) and Associate Banks and Other Banks) SBI Bank Challan
  • Click on the “Print Application Receipt” link for printing the application receipt which contains Application Reference Number (ARN)/Appointment Number. It is no longer mandatory to carry a printout of Application Receipt. You can even show the SMS with your appointment details as proof of your appointment at the time of visiting the Passport Office.
  • Visit the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK)/Regional Passport Office (RPO) as you're your appointment booking. Ensure to carry along all the original documents.

What are the documents required while applying for a passport online?

Mentioned below are the documents that are accepted as valid for proof of birth:

  • Birth Certificate issued by the Registrar of Births and Deaths or the Municipal Corporation. Same can be obtained from other prescribed authority which is empowered under the Registration of Birth and Deaths Act, 1969 to register the birth of a child born in India
  • Transfer/School leaving/Matriculation Certificate from the school last attended or a recognised educational board
  • Policy Bond issued by the Public Life Insurance Corporations/Companies containing the DOB of the insurance policyholder
  • A document stating service record of the applicant (applicable in case of Government servants) or the Pay Pension Order (applicable for retired Government Servants), duly attested/certified by the officer/in-charge of the Administration of the respective Ministry/Department of the applicant
  • Aadhaar Card/E-Aadhaar
  • Election Photo Identity Card (EPIC) issued by the Election Commission of India
  • PAN Card issued by the Income Tax Department
  • Driving License issued by the Transport Department of concerned State Government
  • A declaration from the Head of the Orphanage/Child Care Home confirming the DOB of the applicant on an official letterhead

Here is the list of documents accepted as valid proof of address:

  • Water, telephone or electricity bill
  • Election Commission Photo ID card 
  • Employers certificate on a letter - from reputed companies 
  • Spouse’s passport copy (First and last page including family details mentioning applicant’s name as the spouse of the passport holder), (the applicant’s present address has to match with the address mentioned in the spouse’s passport)
  • Proof of Gas Connection 
  • Parent’s passport copy, in case of minors (First and last page) 
  • Income Tax Assessment Order 
  • Aadhaar Card
  • Rent Agreement 
  • Photo Passbook of existing Bank Account (Scheduled Public Sector Banks, Scheduled Private Sector Indian Banks and Regional Rural Banks only)

An appointment can be scheduled at the nearest Passport Seva Kendra within 8 working days. After all the formalities have been processed, it takes approximately 3 additional weeks for the passport to be delivered to the applicant. In the Tatkal system, a passport gets dispatched within 3 business days.

1. Can I easily get a Passport through the Tatkal mode?

If you are in an urgent need for your passport, it is easy to get one using the Tatkal mode.

2. How is a passport availed under normal category different from tatkal application mode?

A passport availed under normal mode is not very different from that obtained through the Tatkal mode. The primary difference is that the total processing time and the associated fees are different. The fees charged for a 36-page passport booklet is Rs. 1,500. For a 60-page passport booklet, the fees are Rs. 2,000. The processing time for a normal passport application is 30-60 days. Under the tatkal application mode, the processing time is reduced to 3-7 days and the application fees are Rs. 3,500 for a 36-page passport booklet. The fees are Rs. 4,000 for a 60-page passport booklet.

3. What documents are required to be submitted for a passport application under the tatkal mode?

An applicant has to submit the following documents while applying for a passport under tatkal:

  • Proof of present address.
  • Proof of date of birth.
  • Prior Intimation letter as per Annexure H.

4. How do I apply for my passport online?

To apply for a passport online, you must first register yourself on Passport Seva Portal. After registering, login to the Passport Seva Portal. Look for Fresh Passport or Reissue of Passport link and follow the steps required.

5. Can I pay passport fees online?

Yes, while booking an appointment for a passport application, you have to make the online fee payment. Without fee payment, your online application process will not be complete.

6. Is it possible to convert a normal passport application to Tatkal?

If you are making a fresh passport application, it can be converted to Tatkal. This can be done at the nearest RPO. Apart from making an extra payment and submitting verification certificate and Annex E, you will also have to furnish a form stating that you wish to change from normal mode to tatkal.

7. I missed my passport appointment. What do I do now?

OIf you were unable to visit the Passport Seva Kendra, your application will remain incomplete and you will have to begin the steps of application from the start.
