The passport application and related processes fall under the Ministry of External Affairs of the Government of India. The Ministry under its passport services provides the facility to apply for a new passport, renew the passport upon expiry, modify or change or update the details on the passport along with other services like tracking the passport application status.

By making the services online, Passport Seva Portal (PSP) has effectively reduced the burden of the applicants to physically visit the passport office and check the status of the supplication each time. applicants can check the status of their application in real-time to avoid any hassles and get the correct information as to where or at what stage is the application stuck. What are the various tracking services available on Passport Seva Portal?

The Passport Seva portal provides the tracking facility of the passport of any applicant at various stages of the process of sanction of passport. This helps them get exact details of the process as well as the time is taken in completing the process before going to the next stage.

The various stages of tracking available under the passport services are mentioned below.

  • Application status
  • Application under review
  • Police verification status
  • Police verification report submitted or not
  • Passport granted/ printed/ dispatched/ returned undelivered. 

These statuses displayed in the tracking portal are the indication of the stage at which the application is held and the further processes to go.

How can I track my passport application status?

1. Via the Passport Seva Portal 

Passport application status earlier had to be checked by visiting the PSK (Passport Seva Kendra) where the application was submitted and requesting the application status by providing the file number. However, now the process of tracking the passport application has been made online. This is to facilitate the ease of operations for the applicant as well as speed up the process of tracking to ensure that timely action is taken at the necessary stage where the application is held.

The process to track the status of their passport application is given hereunder.

  • Visit the passport application website (passportindia[dot]gov[dot]in)
  • On the home page, the applicant will get the option to track the application status.
  • The applicant will have to click on that option to proceed.
  • On the next page displayed, the applicant will have to first select the application type from the available options in the drop-down menu.
  • After selecting the application type, the next step is to provide the relevant details like the file number and the date of birth (to be selected from the calendar displayed alongside). It should be noted that these details have to be exactly the same as mentioned in the passport application to get the correct results.
  • After submitting the details mentioned above, the applicant will get the details of the application status and the further action needed to be done in case it is required.

2. Using the mPassport Seva mobile app

Apart from the above mode of tracking the passport application, the applicant can also track their passport application through the mobile app of the Passport services. This mobile application facility of Passport Services is known as mPassport Seva and is available on Google Playstore or Apple store.

The process to track the passport application status through mPassport Seva is mentioned below.

  • The first step is to download the application from the Google Playstore or Apple Store.
  • After that, the applicant will have to log in to the app using their registered mobile number or email id.
  • Applicants will receive an OTP which has to be submitted to proceed.
  • Following this, the applicant will have to select the option to track the passport application status available on the home page.
  • In this case, the applicant will have to submit the necessary details like the file number and the date of birth.
  • These details have to match the details submitted at the time of application to get the correct results.
  • After correctly submitting the details, the exact status of the passport application will be displayed to the applicant.
  • This mobile application can also be used to track the delivery status of the passports that have already been dispatched.

3. Using the National Toll-free Number

While the online service of tracking the passport application has made it quite easier for the majority of people, there is still a vast majority in India who may not find this easy, especially in the case of elderly or less technology-savvy people. For such applicants, tracking of passport applications can be done through offline modes as well.

The offline mode includes the tracking of the passport application by physically visiting the PSK where they have submitted the application and providing the file number along with the date of birth or by any of the following modes.

  • Calling the National Call Centre at the toll-free number 1800 258 1800.
  • Citizens of Jammu and Kashmir and the North-Eastern States can contact on 040-66720567 and 040-66720581 respectively to get the required information. It is to be noted that these are paid numbers and not toll-free.
  • The service available at this number is between 8 am to 10 pm where the applicants can talk to the Citizen Service Executive to get their query resolved.
  • During non-working hours, the applicants can talk to the automated IVRS to get the necessary information.

4. Via SMS

The other mode of tracking is by sending an SMS from the registered mobile number. The SMS is to be sent as ‘STATUS FILE NUMBER’ to 9704 100 100.

This SMS facility is a paid service and has to be opted at the time of making the application for the passport.

Alternatively, applicants can also email the PSK with their file number and date of birth to get the relevant information.
