Introduction

Indian citizens can apply for a passport at their nearest Passport Office. The passport application process has been made completely online. The form filling and passport fee payment is done online. The applicant has to fix an appointment to visit the Passport Office in person to show their documents for verification purposes.

There are different fees charged for the passport application. There are also other fees and charges associated with the passport. This fee is determined based on the category you are applying under, whether it is a fresh passport or renewal, and also the number of pages you want in your passport booklet.

How to pay Passport Application Fees? What are the common modes of payment?

Normal Passport Application Fee Payment 

Applicants are required to pay the passport fees while filling up the online application form through the Passport Seva Portal. Online Payment should be made compulsorily for booking appointments at all PSKs/ POPSKs. One can pay online through any one of the following modes:

  • Credit/ Debit Card (MasterCard and Visa)
  • Internet Banking (State Bank of India(SBI), Associate Banks and Other Banks)
  • SBI Bank Challan
  • SBI Wallet Payment

Tatkal Passport Fees Payment

Applicants filing under Tatkaal need to pay just the fees as applicable under Regular Category when making Online Payment. The balanced Tatkaal fee applicable should be payable in "Cash" at Passport Seva Kendra/ Passport Office, while application under 'Tatkal' category is being processed.

Payment of Passport Charge to PSKs

Applicants who visit Passport Seva Kendra without any appointment as Walk-in can pay the passport fees in cash.

How can I pay Passport Fees using SBI Challan method?

  • Once you have filled the application form, you can choose one of the methods to pay the passport fees. You can choose SBI Challan as the payment mode and generate a Challan.
  • You have to take this challan to your nearest SBI Branch and make the payment at the counter.
  • It will take around 2 business days for the payment to reflect against your passport application. You can check the status under ‘Track Payment Status’ option on your Passport Seva Portal login.
  • Once the payment status shows ‘Success’, you can proceed to fix the appointment for your Passport Office.

The Passport Seva Portal has a dedicated ‘Fee Calculator’ feature that helps you to find out the respective fee for the passport services you want to avail.

It is available on the home page of the Passport Seva Portal. It is called the ‘Fee Calculator’.

SMS Services Charges Payment

SMS Services is an exclusive value added program for applicants. Once you have registered for this service, you will receive an SMS alert and daily alerts on your cell phone for your passport application. This helps you to keep track of your passport application at your fingertips.

You need to choose 'SMS Services' before submitting your application and pay in cash Rs. 50 (including all taxes) during your visit to Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) for the processing of your application. Payment receipt will be issued after successful payment of the SMS charge to the PSK.

It carries a one-time enrolment charge of Rs.50, inclusive of all taxes.

Passport Fees – FAQs

1. Will the Passport Fees be refunded if I am unable to attend the personal interview on the appointed date and time?

No. The passport fee once paid is non-refundable. If you fail to go to the passport office on the appointment date and time, you need to fill a fresh form, book another appointment and go to the passport office to complete the passport application.

2. Do I need to pay any fees or charges to the passport officer?

No. Passport fee payment is done completely online. You need not pay any additional amount to any agent or officer to get your passport. However, Tatkal fees should be paid at the counter at the time of appointment.

3. The pages on my current passport have been exhausted. Can I get an additional booklet?

Yes, additional booklets can be availed by paying an additional fee. The fee is Rs.1500 for a 36-page booklet and Rs.2000 for a 60-page booklet.

4. May I transfer my fees paid from one application reference number (ARN) to another ARN?

The fee, once paid, cannot be transferred from one ARN to another ARN.

5. How can I make a challan payment if I don't have a bank account with SBI?

If you are not the holder of an SBI bank account, you may choose to make payment electronically using either the Credit/Debit Card of other banks or SBI Challan.

6. What happens if multiple payments are made for a single application passport fee?

The concerned RPO shall refund the excess payment to the original payment method.

7. Is there a validity period for the fees paid?

The paid fees will be valid for one year from the date of payment. If you have booked an appointment, the invoice will be valid for one year from the date of your first appointment.

8. Is there any service charge/amount that I need to pay while paying via an e-Mode payment option?

In the case of Debit/Credit Cards, the bank would charge 1.5% + Tax. Any adjustment of fees will be alerted accordingly. However, there are no charges imposed for the use of SBI and its Affiliate Banks Internet banking and payment by Challan. The related fees are displayed on the payment screen.
