As a vehicle owner in India, there are certain documents that you have to carry with you when you are driving. These documents include your driving license, your insurance certificate, and your emission test certificate. Another essential document needed by Indian vehicle owners is the registration certificate known as the RC book. If your original RC is lost or torn, you will have to get a duplicate RC book. Here
About Duplicate RC Book
The duplicate RC is a replica of the original RC given to a vehicle owner for a specific vehicle that has been registered with a regional transport office (RTO). When a registration certificate of a vehicle is reported to be lost or damaged, a duplicate registration certificate is issued to the registered owner on reapplication.
To get a duplicate RC, you have to report to the police station in the jurisdiction of which the loss has occurred. You have to convey the fact in writing to the registering authority that has issued the certificate of registration. You have to apply for a duplicate certificate of registration to the last registered authority in Form 26. Then, pay the appropriate fee as specified in Rule 81 of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules 1989.
You can apply for a duplicate RC online through the following steps:
You can visit the RTO office where your original RC was generated for an offline duplicate RC. Execute the following steps:
When you apply for a duplicate RC either offline or online, you have to keep all the documents in place. This will ensure that there is no unnecessary delay in obtaining your duplicate RC. Here is a list of the primary documents needed to apply for a duplicate RC.
Besides the primary documents above, the following paperwork may also be required in some states of India.
According to the Motor VehAct, rule no: 53(2) states duplicate RC fee structure as follows:
Go to the Parivahan Sewa services portal to know the duplicate RC status. You can check the status under “RCDL”. You have to put your registration number to know the status.
The processing time required for getting duplicate RC is 15 to 30 days from the date of submission. After processing, the duplicate RC download system is also available. So, you can conveniently get your duplicate RC directly from RTO without the intervention of any third party. However, you should always retain a photocopy of the original RC as it is useful when you apply for a duplicate one. The registration number and other details mentioned on it are necessary to fill up the application form no: 26A.
