Driving License Renewal in India

To drive a vehicle legally on the roads, an Indian driving license is mandatory. However, to obtain a driving license there is a separate process to it and the license is not received right away.

An individual wanting to drive any type of motor vehicle in India has to get their learning license first. A learner’s license is required for learning. A person has to appear for a test before an RTO authority, who after proper examination, will declare if the person has passed the examination or not. Such an examination is held after a month’s time after the issue of a learning license.

How to Check Driving License Status Online?

To check the status of your Driving License online follow the steps mentioned below:

  • Step 1: Click on the ‘Online Services’ tab on the main page of the website.
  • Step 2: From the drop-down menu, click on the ‘Driving Related Services ‘ tab
  • Step 3: Select the state in which you applied for a license from the drop-down menu.
  • Step 4: Click on the ‘Application Status’ tab on the top right.
  • Step 5: Enter the details required such as ‘Application Number’, and ‘Date of Birth’.
  • Step 6: Lastly, enter the Captcha as shown on the screen and click Submit.

Driving License Renewal Online

Your Driving License must be up to date and if not, you should apply for renewal and can even apply in the grace period for such renewal. You are required to pay a higher fee if not renewed within the grace period, which is 30 days after your license expires. An application for renewal shall be entertained not more than a month after the date of expiry of the license. However, if more than 5 years have elapsed since the expiry of a license, the applicant is required to undergo all the formalities for obtaining a fresh license.

Steps to apply for a Driving License Renewal

Step 1: Visit the official Parivahan website https://parivahan.gov.

Step 2: Navigate to the menu related to Driving Services

Step 3: Select your State on the screen

Step 4: Select Renewal of DL from the menu on the site.

Step 5: Follow the onscreen instructions and click on Continue

Step 6: Complete the requisite form and upload the required data

  • Enter your Driving License Number
  • Date of Birth
  • Select the Category of License holder from the drop-down menu.
  • Select the State
  • Lastly, select the RTO

Step 7: Next,click on Proceed and confirm your details and select the option to Renew License. After this step, an acknowledgement will be generated. Print the same.

Visit the nearest RTO office along with the original license, Form No.9, a Medical Certificate, three copies of passport-size photographs and the acknowledgement print.

Submit your application after paying the specified fees of Renewal to get your Driving License by post.

Grace Period for License Renewal

A Grace period of 30 days is available for renewal after the expiry of the license. A license is generally valid for a period of 20 years from the date of issue. If an application for renewal is made within 30 days of expiry, the renewal shall be with effect from the date of expiry. However, if it is made after 30 days, it shall be with effect from the date of receipt of such application.

Duplicate Driving License in India

A driving License is an important document in India as it gives citizens the right to drive and also acts as valid identity proof. If anyone loses their driving license, they can apply for a Duplicate Driving License from the RTO by filling out an application form and submitting it with the required documents.

Steps to apply for a Duplicate Driving License

  • Visit your nearest RTO office.
  • Obtain form LLD- the application form for a duplicate driving license.
  • Attach the requisite documents after filling out the specified form.
  • Pay the requisite fee of Rs 200 to process the application
