Learners License

Like swimming or cycling, driving has also become a life skill these days. A lot of people drive cars and own them. The major reason is the affordability of the cars in the market and also the increase in the purchasing power of the general public. According to the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, no individual can drive a vehicle on the road without holding a valid driving license.

But, if you are just beginning to learn how to drive then you must hold a valid learner's license in India (LLR). The persons holding a learner's license must be accompanied by people holding a permanent license while driving the vehicle. Let us know more about the learner's license.

Eligibility of Learners' License in India

Depending upon the class of vehicles and the learner's license sought, the eligibility for the license differs in each case. Some of the cases are given below

Documents Required for a Learner’s License

While obtaining a learner’s license, the applicant has to submit all the documents to the respective Regional Transport Office of the state. For applicants applying online, a scanned copy of all the documents has to be uploaded. This will help to make the process hassle-free and easy for the applicant.

How to Apply for Learner's License Online?

The state Regional Transport Offices have a website that provides an option to apply for the learners’ license online. Though the steps for filing a license differ in each state the general procedure remains the same and hence this is a simple guideline as to how the application can be submitted online.

  • Step 1: You can check if the official RTO website of your state has a facility to apply for the learner’s license online.
  • Step 2: If the official website of the state has the option to apply for the license online, then find the application form linked to it and fill in details like name, age, address and other mandatory details required in the form.
  • Step 3: In the case of learner’s license applications, the applicants have an option to choose the slot for the test.
  • Step 4: The payment for the application form can be done online and the receipt is received by the applicant.
  • Step 5: In some states, the receipt has to be carried along for the test. The receipt has to be submitted to the RTO.
  • Step 6: Taking the test and qualifying are compulsory for getting the license.

How to Apply for a Learner's License through Parivahan Website?

  • Step 1: Visit the official website parivahan.gov
  • Step 2: Select the online services tab placed at the top of the page
  • Step 3: Select ‘Driving license-related services’ from the menu
  • Step 4: After the page is redirected, select the fee/payment tab
  • Step 5: Enter the required details
  • Step 6: Click on the calculate fees option
  • Step 7: Choose the payment gateway
  • Step 8: Make the payment on the website.

How is the Test Conducted for a Learning License?

All the applicants who are applying for a learner's license have to either give an online or a written test for getting the learner license. Passing this test is mandatory for getting the license.

Some of the guidelines for the test are

  • The test time is given on the receipt and the application form once you book the slot. It is expected that you reach the venue half an hour before.
  • Each RTO will have a flashcard or printouts of certain rules and regulations that have to be followed while driving. You can easily take these to study
  • If you have applied online, then you have to give the slip on the designated counter
  • The test is generally a multiple choice question test.
  • If you fail the test, you can reappear after a week’s time
  • You can apply for the permanent license after 30 days of getting the learning license. The application for a driving license should be made within 180 days.

What is an International Driving Permit?

An International Driving Permit (IDP) is a legal document issued to Indians traveling abroad, which facilitates them to drive in any foreign country where the document is considered valid. However, it is advisable to carry the original license along with the passport and the IDP when on foreign roads to avoid any inconvenience. The IDP is similar to a passport and often gets issued in multiple languages as per the destination country's requirement. It is valid for one year.
