What is FASTag?

Karur Vysya Bank Fastag

The FASTag is issued in the form of a rectangular sticker with a magnetic strip and it uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). It will have to be pasted on the top center of the windscreen of the car. This will allow travelers and commercial vehicles to cross the toll booths without waiting at the counter to pay the toll fee.

National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is all geared up to make a collection of tolls completely electronic. The government has made it compulsory for all vehicle owners to use FASTags to make electronic toll payments and not cash payments that will draw fines from 15th December.

FASTag is being introduced as it not only saves time for consumers but also helps conserve fuel as there is no need to wait for cash transactions. It reduces vehicle idle time and fuel consumption for the vehicle, saving Rs.60,000 crore in fuel bills. It can be purchased from over 28,500 Point-of-Sale (PoS) terminals. It can be conveniently bought by visiting websites of different member banks such as KVB, SBI, ICICI Bank, Axis bank, Paytm Payment Banks, HDFC Bank, IDFC First Bank. It is now also available online on Amazon.

How does KVB FASTag work?

FASTag is the magnetic strip equipped with RFID software to promote the collection of electronic tolls at toll plazas. The tag is an easy-to-use, reloadable RFID tag attached to a wallet and can be used to pay toll charges without stopping at toll plazas. The tag allows users to drive non-stop at toll Plazas through a dedicated FASTag lane and automatic RFID tag scanning deducts toll charges from the connected prepaid account without waiting for the cash transaction. Upon activating the tag profile, the tag will have to be affixed to the windscreen of the car. NHAI, IHMCL, under the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, GOI, developed the electronic toll collection system. NPCI supports the payment & settlement component under the brand name NETC (NATIONAL ELECTRONIC TOLL COLLECTION). This type of technology is common and has been used in Western countries such as Europe, the USA and advanced East Asian economies such as Singapore.
