Introduction

Setu Bharatam Yojana is another ambitious vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It was launched in the year 2016. The aim of the scheme is to build over bridges or under bridges that will provide safe and convenient travel on National Highways. The intention of the scheme is to make all the national highways railway crossings free by the year 2019. The estimated investment for this project is Rs. 50,000 crores.

The scheme has been laid out to make 208 new bridges. It also covers 1500 bridges that are aimed to be broadened or restored or even replaced. The project is undertaken and executed by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways.

Objectives of Setu Bharatam Yojana

The scheme was initiated with the aim to overhaul the bridges on the national highways and to make them railway crossing free in the set period of time. The scheme has therefore outlined certain objectives that it pursues to achieve over the course of this project. The objectives stated under the scheme are mentioned below.

  • To focus on the nationwide national Highways and to construct the bridges over national highways across the country.
  • To construct over 208 bridges or under bridges on the national highways across the country that will help in the removal of the railway crossings.
  • To map the bridges under the Bridge Management System as per the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to map 1,50,000 bridges across the country.
  • To revamp or rehabilitate 1500 existing bridges and give them new life.
  • To improve the quality of the bridges and reduce the number of accidents caused due to faulty construction of bridges.
  • Setting up a team that will be assigned to check and determine the quality of the bridges and give more focus to the upgradation of the bridges that have poor quality.
  • To provide or ensure ease of travel to the commuters by construction of bridges which will eventually result in reduction of traffic.
  • To make use of scientific methods and technologies in measuring the distance, latitude, longitude, come up with unique and sustainable design and materials, etc.
