PAN or Permanent Account Number is a 10-digit identification number issued by the government to all taxpayers. It is an important number that is mandated in all income tax transactions and financial statements. The government has authorized NSDL and UTIITSL, two organisations, to issue and manage PAN cards to the crores of taxpayers in India.

The Department of Income Tax performs a third party audit to verify the identity and address of the PAN applicants along with the validity of documents submitted during the PAN application. Government and non-government entities seek to verify PAN details of thousands of users transacting with them.

Entities seeking to verify PAN details of users can use the online PAN verification service for verification of PANs by authorized entities, NSDL & UTIITSL.

PAN verification can be done in 3 ways:

  • Screen based verification
  • File and Screen based Verification
  • Software (API) based verification

Screen based verification: Users may furnish up to a maximum of five PANs in the provided screen after login. The PANs will be entered and then submitted in the boxes given in the panel. The response which gives PAN details will be shown in the response screen.

File and Screen based verification: Users can upload a file with a maximum of 1000 PANs after login (file structure as specified by the portals). The site will create a response file with details of the PANs available within 24 hours. In case the file format is wrong, the program will forward the rejection within 24 hours. The individual can access the reply for up to 15 days at their convenience.

Software (API) based PAN verification: The facility is an interface that enables the user to perform online PAN verification via a software application by visiting the verification site.
