The Government of India has taken various measures to streamline the Income Tax filing process in the country. These measures are aimed at collecting the right amount of tax from liable individuals. Linking of PAN number with Aadhaar is one such measure. It has been made mandatory for all tax payers to link their PAN and Aadhaar before June 30th, 2020, or else their PAN will become inoperative. You will then be unable to use your PAN for any financial transactions which require PAN as mandatory.

Linking Aadhaar with PAN for Registered Users of Income Tax e-filing website

Existing tax payers would already have a user ID & password for the e-filing website. They can login to the portal and follow these steps to link their PAN & Aadhaar:

  • Login to the e-filing website using your PAN (User ID), password and your date of birth.
  • After logging in, click on 'Profile Settings' tab and select the last option 'Link Aadhaar'.
  • On this page, you will be required to enter your PAN number, name (as it appears on your PAN card), Date of Birth & your Aadhaar number
  • Enter the CAPTCHA on the screen and hit ‘Submit’.
  • If the details on your PAN and Aadhaar are an exact match, you will get a success message.
  • If there are discrepancies in the details, it is advised to visit your nearest PAN center operated by NSDL or UTIITSL to get the mismatch resolved before linking PAN & Aadhaar.

Linking Aadhaar with PAN for Non-Registered Users of Income Tax e-filing website

If you are not registered on the e-filing website and do not wish to get registered just to link your PAN and Aadhaar, no worries, you can do that too.

  • On the homepage of the e-filing website, you can find the option ‘Link Aadhaar’.
  • Click on this link which will take you to the form.
  • On this form, you will be required to fill in your PAN number, name (as it appears on your PAN card), Date of Birth & your Aadhaar number.
  • Enter the CAPTCHA on the screen and hit ‘Submit’.
  • If the details on your PAN and Aadhaar are an exact match, you will get a success message.

Point to remember: While using online linking process, an OTP would be sent in case there is a mismatch in the name but date of birth and gender are matching. This OTP would be sent to the registered mobile number on your Aadhaar to verify and proceed with the linking process. However, users are advised to rectify any discrepancies in the name on PAN & Aadhaar before proceeding with the linking to avoid future problems.
