PAN Form 49A

PAN Form 49A is a form that is used by Indian residents to apply for a PAN. Every Indian citizen should obtain a permanent account number. It is an alphanumeric code that has 10 characters. It is in the form of “AAAAA8888A”. Any individual who is a resident of India and desires to apply for a PAN is required to fill the form 49A. Once the form is filled fully with accurate details, the applicant can make the payment online and submit the form with the required documents and photographs.

What Is The Structure and Components Of Form 49A?

Form 49A is divided into various sections in order to make the form filling process easy and simple. It has 16 sections and each of these has a subsection. You have spaces on the top corners of the form to attach your photographs. The individual has to fill in details, such as AO code, address, name, parents’ name, and source of income.

Form 49A has the following components:

  • Assessing officer code: In this section, the applicant has to specify the Area code, AO type, range code, and AO No.
  • Full name: The full name is a combination of the individual’s marital status, first name, last name, and the surname.
  • Abbreviation of the name: This is the abbreviated name of the applicant. The applicant has to shorten his name as he/she would like to see it on their PAN Card.
  • name: Here, the applicant has to specify if they were known by any other name. If so, the applicant has to provide details, such as first name, last name, and surname of the other name.
  • Gender: The gender of the person has to be mentioned.
  • Date of birth: The applicant has to mention the date of birth in case of an individual. With regard to organizations, they have to mention the date of partnership or incorporation or agreement or trust deed.
  • Father Name: The applicant has to specify the first name, last name, and the surname of their father in this part of the form. This is relevant only to individual applicants and includes married women.
  • Address: The details about residential address and office address should be entered in this part of the form.
  • Address of communication: The applicant has to select the address of communication between the office or residence.
  • Telephone number and email id: The applicant has to mention their country code, state code, and telephone or mobile number.
  • Applicant’s status: The status of the applicant has to be specified, such as individual, a HUF member, partnership firm, company, etc.
  • Registration number: This field indicates the registration number for companies, LLPs, firms etc.
  • Aadhaar number: The Aadhar number should be specified if the individual owns an Aadhaar card.
  • Source of income: The applicant should mention from where they get their income
  • Representative Assessee:The applicant should provide the name and address of the representative assessee.
  • Documents submitted: The applicant has to mention all the documents they have submitted in the form

How To Fill The Form 49A?

1) Basic Rules

a) The form should be filled in English only and in block letters only.

b) Preferably use only black ink.

c) Each box should be filled only with one character, either an alphabet, punctuation, or number. A box should be left blank after every character

2) Signatures/Thumb impression

a) Sign or place your left-hand thumb impression across the photo attached on the left side of the form in such a way that a part of the signature/impression is on the photo and also on the form.

b) Sign or place a left-hand thumb impression within the box on the right side of the form. Do not sign over the photo. The face of the applicant must be clear, or else the application will be rejected.

c) Thumb impression, if used, should be certified by a magistrate or a notary public or a gazetted officer under an official seal and stamp.

3) AO Code

This consists of details such as Area Code, AO Type, Range Code, and AO Number. AO code of the jurisdictional assessing officer must be filled up by the applicant. These details can be obtained from the Income Tax Office, PAN Centre, or websites of PAN Service Providers (www.utiitsl.com or www.tin-nsdl.com)

4) Photographs:

Attach two recent colour photographs with white background (size 3.5 cm x 2.5 cm). Do not staple or pin the photo to the form. The image will be clear on the PAN card only if the photo affixed on the form is clear and of good quality.

5) Avoid overwriting and give the correct details.

6) Fill in all the mandatory fields.

7) Select a suitable title and do not use abbreviations in the first and last name.

8) In the case of a company, the name should be specified without any abbreviation

9) In the case of the sole proprietorship, you should not prefix the name.

10) Fill up the name, DOB details, and address as mentioned in the proof you are enclosing.

11) There are some details that one needs to know about while filling in the contact details in the form. While mentioning the address, it is essential to provide complete details including details of town, city, and pin code. It is also important to provide the STD code for the phone number given.

PAN Form 49AA

Foreign residents are also eligible for PAN. The application for the allotment of the permanent account number for foreign residents and entities outside India is Form 49AA. In PAN Card Form 49AA, the KYC details should be filled in by the applicant or foreign institutional investor or a qualified foreign investor as specified under SEBI regulations. The applicant can submit the form once they have filled it with the accurate details and furnished the required documents along with the form.
