Change Name in PAN Card after Marriage

Every individual/entity carrying out business or employment or any financial transactions are required to hold a PAN Card in India. It usually contains the name, gender, date of birth, and PAN of such a cardholder. There exist chances that the above details may be misspelled or incorrectly written. The details mentioned must be correct to avoid issues in the future. This is typically applicable when women change their titles after marriage.

The process to change the name on the PAN card is described below.

Documents Required to Change the Name in PAN Card after Marriage

A married woman is required to submit any of the following as documentary proof for changing her name on the PAN card :

  • Marriage Certificate or Proof of Marriage
  • A copy of the publication of the name change in the Official Gazette
  • A Valid Passport copy
  • Certificate issued by a Gazetted Officer in case of a change in the applicant's name.

Women can change their titles through both an online and an offline process. In an online process, they can visit the NSDL or the UTISL portal to do the same.

Procedure to Change Name in PAN Card after Marriage

1. Visit the TIN-NSDL/UTIITSL website for making changes

2. Under the section Change/Correction in Data section, click on Apply

3. Fill in the form using the details in the supporting documents.

4. You are required to mention your PAN in the form and tick only the cell in front of your name.

5. Click on 'Validate' to check the information entered in the form.

6. On successful Validation, click on the Submit button.

7. Now, you are required to make payments for processing your request. Payments can be made through Net Banking, Credit/Debit Cards, Cash Cards, etc

8. Once the payment is complete, download the PAN application from the portal and take a printout.

9. Affix two passport-sized photos on the form and sign across the given space.

10.The next step would be to attach the required document proofs, which are required to be self-attested along with the application form.

11.Next, send the application to NSDL, if applied through the NSDL portal, or to UTIITSL, if applied through the UTIITSL portal.

12.To track the status of your application, use the application reference number.

e-KYC method for PAN Name change

An applicant may go for a paperless e-KYC at the time of filling out the form. By following the process, you neither have to submit additional documents nor have to send the application form by post to NSDL or UTIITSL. It can be carried out through any of the following processes:

  • Aadhar based e-KYC with e-Sign
  • Using Scanned Documents/DigiLocker with e-Sign.
  • Using scanned documents/DigiLocker with Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)

Offline process

  • Download the Request for New PAN Card/ Changes or Correction in PAN form
  • Fill out the details carefully.
  • Next, attach supporting documents including identity proof, address proof, and passport-size photographs.
  • Submit the form to the nearest NSDL collection center.
  • Lastly, pay the application fees online and you will receive a 15-digit acknowledgement number to track your application.

Points to follow while filling the form for Changes in PAN Card

For correction in the PAN database or request for reissue of PAN, the applicant shall apply in Request for new PAN card/ Changes in PAN, which is different from the Form 49 and Form 49AA.

Fill out the necessary details in the mandatory fields of the form for changes or correction of PAN data and also select the corresponding box where corrections are required

For any Change or Correction of PAN data, the address for communication will be updated on the Income Tax Department website, using the address provided in the application form.

Upon updating the database, a new PAN card will be issued.

Instructions for filling the form for Changes/Correction in PAN Card

  • The form is to be filled in BLOCK letters and Black ink only.
  • PAN number is required to be mentioned correctly at the required place.
  • The photograph must have a size of 3.5*2.5 cm.
  • The photograph should not be stapled or clipped.
  • The signature should be given in such a manner that it is across the affixed photo as well as the form.
  • In case of a thumb impression, it must be attested by a Gazetted Officer or Magistrate under official seal and stamp.
  • The correct AO code should be provided if necessary.
  • Write a complete postal code in the application with a proper landmark.
  • Also, mention the correct phone number and email address to generate OTP and to track the application status.

Things to Avoid while filling the form to change the title in PAN

  • Any overwriting or correction in the form
  • Signing outside the box.
  • Applying for a new PAN if you already have one.
  • Provide any additional details in the form.

The charges for making changes in PAN are the same as a fresh application which are Rs 93 excluding GST for an Indian communication address and Rs 864 excluding GST in case of a foreign communication address. An acknowledgement shall be generated on successful payment, which should be saved for later communication with NSDL.

Documents for Change in PAN Card Details

The documents that are required as a proof of identity, address, date of birth and any existing PAN are –

A. For Individuals and HUF:

ID Proof

  • Aadhar card issued by the UIDAI
  • Elector photo identity card
  • Driving License
  • Passport
  • The ration card has a photo of the applicant.
  • Arm’s license
  • Photo Identity Card issued by the Central or State Government or Public sector Undertaking
  • Pensioner Card with photograph of the applicant
  • Central Government Health Scheme service Card or Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme

Residence Proof

  • Post office passbook having the address of the applicant
  • Most recent property tax assessment order
  • Domicile certificate
  • Allotment letter of accommodation issued by the Central or State Government, which is not more than 3 years old.
  • Property Registration Document

Age Proof

  • Matriculation certificate or a Marksheet of a recognized Board
  • Birth Certificate issued by a municipal authority or any authorized office
  • Photo Identity Card issued by the Central or State Government or Public sector Undertaking
  • Central Government Health Scheme service Card or Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme
  • A marriage certificate is issued by the specified authority.
  • An affidavit is sworn before a magistrate clearly showing the date of birth.

In case none of the above is available the following can also work –

  • A certificate in original, duly signed by a Member of Parliament or Legislative Assembly or a Municipal Councilor or a Gazetted Officer, as the case may be.
  • An Original Bank certificate on letterhead from the branch along with the name and seal of the issuing officer
  • Employer certificate in the prescribed format, in original.
