Vijaya Bank is one of the most well-established banks in South India and a major presence in vijaya state. It was founded in 1931 by Dr. A.B. Shetty and a group of agriculturists from the local land-owning community in the Mangalore region of South Canara (now Dakshina Kannada) district. The main purpose behind setting up the bank was to enable farmers and other agriculturists to obtain credit at lower rates of interest than from usurious local moneylenders, develop the banking habit and enjoy the many benefits of being part of a formal banking system.
Vijaya Bank was set up on Vijayadashami day in 1931, thereby giving it its name. It was originally set up in Mangaluru but moved its headquarters to Bengaluru in 1969.
