Aadhaar Card is a unique 12-digit identification number given to all citizens and residents of India. This concept has been in controversy ever since its introduction a few years back. UIDAI is the appointed Government Body to manage this unique ID system for our country. Data protection and privacy have been the biggest issues related to this concept. However, the Aadhaar Number helps in reducing identity thefts and fraudulent transactions due to the inability of duplicating data. UIDAI has laid out the process for getting the Aadhaar Card. While this is not mandatory for children, there are merits in getting the Aadhaar Card done for them.


Aadhaar Card can be issued to children. UIDAI issues Aadhaar cards even to the new-borns. Some hospitals have taken one step further by applying for the Aadhaar Card along with the birth certificates of new-born babies. Aadhaar Card can be taken for children right from birth till the age of 15. The following table shows the details:

One of the parents needs to mandatorily submit their Aadhaar Card. If both parents do not have an Aadhaar Card, they need to apply for it first before applying for their child.The documents to be submitted while applying for an Aadhaar Card is similar to those of adults.

The process of applying for an Aadhaar Card for a child is slightly different from an adult. There are different documents to be submitted.


The process of applying for an Aadhaar Card for children below the age of 5 years is mentioned below:

  • Log onto the official website of UIDAI.
  • Locate the nearest Aadhaar Card Enrolment Centre to your residence using information of City, Pin Code and Search Box.
  • Download the Aadhaar Enrolment Form and include one of the parent’s Aadhaar number as well. This information is mandatory.
  • Visit the Aadhaar Card Enrolment Centre with your child.
  • Have the photograph taken for the child.
  • Demographic details are taken from the parent’s Aadhaar card.
  • Submit birth certificate of the child.
  • Biometrics is not done for children below the age of 5 years.
  • Once the application has been successfully submitted, the acknowledgement slip with the Enrolment Number is handed over to the parent. This enrolment number can be used to track the status of the Aadhaar Card Application.
  • The average process time for an Aadhaar card is 90 days.

One can apply for an Aadhaar Card for children in the age group of 5 and 15 years. The following steps can be noted in this regard:

  • Log onto the official website of UIDAI.
  • Locate the nearest Aadhaar Card Enrolment Centre to your residence using information of City, Pin Code and Search Box.
  • Download the Aadhaar Enrolment Form and include one of the parent’s Aadhaar number as well in case there is no valid residence proof for your child.
  • Submit the form at the Aadhaar Enrolment Centre.
  • Biometrics is done for the child. Iris scanning and 10 fingerprints are taken.
  • Facial photographs are taken of your child.
  • Once the details are submitted successfully, an acknowledgement receipt is given which contains the Enrolment number for the Aadhaar Card Application. With this Enrolment ID, one can track the status of the Aadhaar Card.
  • The processing of the Aadhaar Card is done in 90days and this is sent to your address as mentioned in the application form.
  • When the child turns 15 years of age, the biometrics needs to be updated on the system.

The following documents are required while applying for your child’s Aadhaar Card:

Up to the age of 5 years

  • Birth certificate
  • Any one parent’s Aadhaar Card
  • Original copies of the birth certificate and parent’s Aadhaar card

Between the ages 5 and 15 years

  • Birth Certificate
  • School Identity Card
  • Bonafide Certificate from the school
  • One parent’s Aadhaar Card
  • Identity certificate which has been issued by a Gazetted Officer on a letterhead which consists of the child’s photo

Address Proof

Any of the below mentioned documents can be submitted as Address Proof for your child’s Aadhaar Card application:

  • Any one parent’s Aadhaar Card
  • Address certificate that is issued by a Gazetted Officer on a letterhead which contains the child’s photograph
  • Address certificate issued by the Village Panchayat Head or its equivalent authority

It is important to note here that there is no fee to be paid for a child’s Aadhaar Card application. This cost is borne by the Government. If any demographic data needs to be updated, there is a nominal fee of Rs. 30/- applicable. The same cost is applicable for biometric updating as well.

3. Is it mandatory for the parents to have an Aadhaar Card before applying for a child?

If the child is below 5 years, it is mandatory that one of the parents has already got an Aadhaar Card.

4. Is biometrics mandatory for children’s application for Aadhaar?

For children up to the age of 5 years, biometrics is not done. It is done when the child is in the age group of 5 and 15 years. At 15 years of age, the biometrics have to be updated.
