Aadhaar number is a 12-digit unique identification number and is issued by the UIDAI on behalf of the Government of India to every Indian citizen. It records an individual’s personal information in the government database and functions as a single identification document. However, it is not meant as a replacement for other documents such as PAN, passport, driving license etc.

Whether you are applying for a new Aadhaar card or to wish to make any changes in your existing one, you will not have to stand in a bank or post office queues as the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has opened online appointment booking facilities.


The first step that you need to take in getting your Aadhaar number generated is to book an appointment at one of the Aadhaar Enrolment Centres. You can also go directly to one of the Enrolment Centres but may have to wait in long queues and face inconvenience. To prevent this, you can try and book UIDAI appointment online for Aadhaar card enrolment. Here are the steps for the same:

  • Visit the UIDAI website and select your city where you want to book an appointment. Booking is available across 114 centres in 53 cities.
  • You will be required to enter your mobile number to which an OTP will be sent.
  • You will be asked to submit Aadhaar number, name, select a language of your choice and select the Aadhaar centre of your choice.
  • After choosing a date and time you will get an appointment booking number.

UIDAI gives an option to reschedule or cancel the online appointment for Aadhaar enrolment online through its website. You must keep your token number available which was provided during the time of booking the appointment.

Cancellation of Appointment - To cancel your Aadhaar card appointment online, follow the below steps:

  • Visit the official website appointments.uidai.gov.in.
  • Enter your Token ID which you would have received after fixing your initial Aadhaar appointment.
  • Enter your mobile number which you used while booking your original appointment.
  • Click on ‘cancel appointment’ button to cancel your appointment.
  • As soon as you cancel, you will automatically get an SMS stating that the appointment made under the previous token id has been cancelled

Rescheduling of Appointment - To reschedule your Aadhaar card appointment online, follow the below steps:

  • Visit the official website appointments.uidai.gov.in.
  • Enter your Token ID which you received while fixing your initial Aadhaar appointment.
  • Enter your mobile number used while booking your original appointment.
  • Click on ‘reschedule appointment’ button to reschedule your appointment.
  • Enter your preferred enrolment centre and location details, including the date and time of appointment.
  • Enter the verification code.
  • Click on ‘fix appointment’ button to confirm.
  • You will also receive an SMS with all the details of your rescheduled appointment


After successfully booking an appointment online, the next step is to visit the enrolment centre in order to submit all your biometric and demographic information. You need to follow below-mentioned steps for the same:

  • Visit the Aadhaar Enrolment Centre post confirmation of appointment
  • Mention all the details and double-check the duly filled form for correction
  • Submit biometric data that includes fingerprints of all 10 fingers and iris scan of both eyes and a photograph

After all the documents and biometric data are checked, you will get an acknowledgement slip of your enrolment having a 14-digit enrolment number and 14-digit date-time stamp on it, which will help you track the status of your application.


There are three criteria which have to be met for Aadhaar card enrolment.

Document-Based: If you have the requisite documents, the application form has to be accompanied with one Proof of Identity (POI) document and one valid Proof of Address (POA) document.

Head of Family: In the absence of personal identification documents, the Head of Family (HOF) may introduce family members by means of documents which establish Proof of Relationship (POR).

Introducer’s Reference: In the absence of a valid Proof of Identity (POI) and Proof of Address (POA) document, an introducer’s reference can be utilised. An introducer is a person appointed by the Registrar and should have an Aadhaar card.


Here is the list of accepted documents which must be available with you for Aadhaar enrolment:

Proof of Identity: PAN card, passport, ration card, government id, driving license, arms license, voter id, school or college id, debit/credit card with a photo

Proof of Address: PAN card, passport, ration card, government id, arms license, voter id, bank statement or passbook

Proof of relationship: Passport, ration card, MNREGA job card, CGHS or ECHS photo card, pensioner photo card, marriage certificate with address

Proof of Date of Birth: PAN card, passport, government id, SSC mark sheet, birth certificate
