Aadhaar card contains a 12-digit unique identification number and is issued by the UIDAI on behalf of the Government of India to every Indian citizen. This biometric document records an individual’s personal information in the government database. Aadhaar functions as a single identification document and is not meant as a replacement for other documents such as PAN, passport, driving license etc. It is issued to India residents based on their biometric and demographic data.

As per the Aadhaar Act, 2016, every Indian resident can apply for an Aadhaar number. A resident is defined as a person who has been living in the country for 182 days or more in the year immediately preceding the date of application for enrolment.
