Know the 3 Ways to Update/Correct Data in your Aadhaar Card

Aadhaar is the biggest biometric identification system, not just in India but in the whole world. Covering billions of Indians, it works both as an ID proof as well as an address proof. Whether you are applying for a new mobile connection, a driving license, opening a bank account, or any other service – your Aadhaar card is one of the important KYC documents. Information linked to it must be accurate and updated at all times.

The UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India), the statutory body responsible for issuing and maintaining Aadhaar, makes it easy for cardholders to update their demographic and biometric data. Here, in this guide, we give you step-by-step instructions on how to update/correct data linked to your Aadhaar card.

Before we take a look at the various ways to update data in your Aadhaar card, let’s answer an important question,

There are plenty of situations where your demographics change – like you may shift homes, change your mobile number, and so on. In such scenarios, you must update the change in your Aadhaar card, so it carries accurate and updated information about you.

Some of the most common scenarios where you have to go in for an Aadhaar update include:

  • Change in contact details – email id, mobile number or residential address
  • Change in name – for various reasons like marriage, etc.
  • Mistakes committed by the enrolment operator – like spelling mistakes, incomplete information, etc
  • Change in gender
  • Change in your biometric data due to an accident or illness
  • Change in your local language
  • Updating biometric data for children at the ages of 5 and 15
  • Multiple authentication failures
  • Request for submission of additional documents by the UIDAI

UIDAI allows for the update/change of the following details:

Demographic DataName, mobile number, email address, date of birth, gender, relationship status, and information sharing consent
Biometric DataFingerprints, Iris and Facial Photograph

UIDAI offers three modes for changes/updates in an Aadhaar card. They are:

  • Online using the UIDAI website
  • Offline via Post
  • Offline at an Aadhaar enrolment centre

*Note that while demographics data like mobile number, address, email id, name, gender can be done using any of the three methods, updating or correcting biometric data is only allowed by visiting an Aadhaar enrolment centre.

Note that to make online updates to your Aadhaar data, you need to have your mobile number registered with your card. If you have not linked your mobile number to your card, then you cannot make any updates online, and you have to visit a nearby physical enrolment centre to complete the process.

Here are some of the documents that are valid for address change:

  • To include the name of a parent/spouse/guardian in the address, make sure to select the appropriate C/o box and enter the name of the person. However, note that it’s not compulsory to provide the C/o details while entering the address in the Aadhaar card.

Updating your Address Online without Valid Documents

If you don’t have any of the valid documents that are accepted by the UIDAI, you can follow the steps listed below to update the address using a validation letter. You can update the address in your Aadhaar card to your current address with the authentication and consent of the address verifier. This can be the landlord, family member, friend, or relative. UIDAI will send an address validation letter to your current address, which is then used for online updation.
