Why Should You Change the Name on the Aadhaar Card?

  • The Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique number allotted by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). It is a very important document of identity proof for Indian residents. So, it is necessary to keep the information on it current.
  • The Aadhaar is useful for myriad purposes. It can be utilized to avail various government and non-government services, banking services, insurance services, taxation services, education, employment, healthcare, subsidy benefits, social \benefits, pensions, scholarships, etc. Thus, it is essential to ensure that the data on Aadhaar is accurate and up-to-date.

Aadhaar Card Name Change at the Enrolment Center

Currently, you cannot change the name on the Aadhaar online. That option has been removed. Now, you can go to the Aadhaar enrolment centre and place the request for name change. At the enrolment centre, UIDAI has made it easy for Aadhaar card holders to place the request by appointing operators to assist with the process. This is called the assisted mode of updation. The UIDAI has currently come up with 2 modes for Aadhaar card name change (Applicable for all other demographic, biometric, and local language updates as well) under the assisted mode. They are as follows:

a) Update Client Standard

  • In this method, the name and other demographic fields, biometric information, and local language can be updated.
  • Under the update client standard method, there is a biometric authentication at the back end.
  • The Aadhaar cardholder must submit document proofs, which will be collected by the operator at the time of accepting the request.
  • A verifier appointed by the UIDAI or registrars present at the enrolment or update centre will do the document validation.
  • Form filling is done by the operator on Update Client Standard as requested by the resident. The operator takes care of the spelling, language issues, transliteration, etc.
  • Finally, he provides biometric sign-off against the Aadhaar card name change update request.
  • The resident gets an acknowledgement receipt with the update request number (URN), which can be used for tracking.

b) Update Client Lite (UCL)

  • This method can also be used to update the name, other demographic details, photo, and local language.
  • In this method also, there is a biometric authentication of the resident at the back end.
  • The documentation verification is done by the verifier appointed by the UIDAI or registrars present at the Enrolment/Update Center.
  • The operator fills the form as per the request of the Aadhaar number holder.
  • Finally, the Aadhaar number holder gets an acknowledgement receipt with the enrolment ID (EID). This can be used for checking the status.
  • The operator will give a biometric sign off against every update request.
