Introduction

Aadhaar Card is a unique 12-digit number assigned to every Indian. It is a biometric document that gives a unique identity to all citizens of the country and helps in reducing identity thefts and fraudulent transactions. This information stays with the Government who uses it for various services and welfare activities. There is also an online version of the Aadhaar Card called e-Aadhaar wherein the online version of the physical Aadhaar Card can be downloaded and shared for any transaction. This government issued identity document is widely accepted and the online version can be easily accessed anywhere. Today, the utility of Aadhaar Card has increased as it is used for validating your identity in applying for a passport, opening a bank account, life certificate, disbursing provident fund. LPG subsidy and so on. UIDAI issues the Aadhaar Card on behalf of the Government of India.


The availability of Aadhaar Card online (E-Aadhaar), anytime and anywhere, has made it very convenient to complete transactions and any other formalities. The online version of the Aadhaar Card can be downloaded from the official website of UIDAI. The card is downloaded in a PDF version which is password protected. The password has 8 characters consisting of your name and year of birth. The name must be typed in CAPITAL letters and YEAR in the YYYY format. Few examples of how to enter the password for different types of names are:

  • If your name is Shubham Nigam and year of birth is 1975
  • E-Aadhaar Password = SHUB1975
  • If your name is Ram Bhandari and year of birth is 1975
  • E-Aadhaar Password = RAMB1975
  • If your name is R.K. Kumar and year of birth is 1975
  • E-Aadhaar Password = R.K.1975
  • If your name is Jim and year of birth is 1975
  • E-Aadhaar Password = JIM1975
  • As it can be seen, one can access the E-Aadhaar Card anywhere through mobile or tablet or laptop with easy to remember password format.

Aadhaar Card is a very important document. One must keep it safe or store it online in a secure format. PDF formats are considered to be secure. Hence, E-Aadhaar cards are available in this format. If the PDF file is further protected with a password, a theft of the document can be avoided. The password is an 8-digit character with a combination of your name and year of birth. This makes the password unique and easy to remember and more importantly, difficult for anyone else to get access. It is therefore a necessity to have a password for your unique identification document.


One can download the online copy of the Aadhaar card in a few easy steps. This can also be printed in case you have lost or misplaced the original Aadhaar Card.

  • Visit the official website of UIDAI
  • Click on the “Personal Details” section and select the most appropriate option from “I have Enrolment ID or Aadhaar”. The Enrolment ID is available with the date in the Acknowledgement slip given at the time of the successfully submitting the application for Aadhaar Card.
  • If you select “Enrolment ID”, then the 14-digit enrolment number needs to be filled in along with the date.
  • If you select “Aadhaar Number”, then the Aadhaar Number needs to be entered in the blank space.
  • In the next step, your full name as given in the Aadhaar Card needs to be entered.
  • Next, the pin code of your given address must be entered.
  • The image text relevant to the image which is displayed in the row above must be entered.
  • Enter the mobile number which was given at the time of application for Aadhaar Card.
  • You will receive a one-time password on the mobile number given which must be entered on the website.
  • Next, click on the “Validate and Download” button.
  • Here, the PDF file is prompted for download which is your e-Aadhaar.
  • It is important to note here that if you are downloading the e-Aadhaar on the laptop or desktop, your facial recognition will need to be completed by using the webcam.
  • After downloading the PDF file of the E-Aadhaar Card, enter the password for the document with the combination of your name and year of birth.

Once the E-Aadhaar file is downloaded in the PDF format, one can enter the E-Aadhaar Password to open the file. There are two ways of doing this:

  • Enter the Pin Code of the address given at the time of registering the Aadhaar Card.
  • If the Pin Code doesn’t work, the combination password of your name and year of birth needs to be entered. For example,
  • If your name is Sheela Patel and year of birth is 1985, then the password will be SHEE1985.
  • Once the file has opened, it is easy to print the document also.

E-Aadhaar is a very convenient alternative to the original Aadhaar Card. This is extremely handy if you misplace or lose the physical Aadhaar card. The E-Aadhaar is safely protected with a combination password. Aadhaar Card comes with its own advantages and serves many purposes:

Direct Benefit Transfer

If the Aadhaar Card is linked to your bank account, all financial benefits of government schemes and various subsidies get credited into your account directly. This helps in ensuring that the money reaches the right recipient and does not go to fraudulent identities.

Passport Application

Aadhaar Card has been made mandatory for passport application. The Ministry of external affairs issues passports to Aadhaar Card holders in a week’s time. The Government is planning to link the Aadhaar Card to the Passport in the future.

Employees Provident Fund Organisation of India

Employees Provident Fund Organisation of India offers Provident Fund services to all Indian employees. The employees are encouraged to link their provident fund account with Aadhaar number to avail quicker services. Employees Provident Fund Organisation of India has become an UIDAI registrar and is authorised to issue Aadhaar Cards.


1. What is the E-Aadhaar Password?

E-Aadhaar Password is a combination of the first four letters of your name and the year of birth in capital letters.

2. What is E-Aadhaar?

E-Aadhaar is the online version of your physical Aadhaar Card. This can be easily downloaded from the UIDAI website and comes handy in case your physical card is misplaced.

3. What information is required to download the E-Aadhaar Card?

There are two ways to download the E-Aadhaar Card:

  • Use the Pin Code given at the time of applying for Aadhaar Card.
  • Use the Enrolment Number (14 digits) given in the acknowledgement receipt when the Aadhaar card application was given. If your original card is misplaced, then you can also use the Aadhaar card number as well.

4. Why is the password required for E-Aadhaar?

The password has been assigned to increase the security of the E-Aadhaar Card. The access to the card can be made only by the holder so that the information does not fall into the wrong hands.
