Investing in a Mediclaim Policy offers you financial support during times of emergency. However, the majority of policyholders fail to read the fine print during policy application. They are surprised (and shocked) to find that some medical treatments are not covered by the plan. To avoid these unpleasant surprises, you need to be aware of the standard exclusions of medical policies.

Though the actual exclusions vary from one Mediclaim policy to another, here are some standard exclusions to be aware of:

  • Pre-existing medical ailments – Most health plans require a waiting period around 2 to 4 years before you can claim coverage for pre-existing medical conditions.
  • Cosmetic treatments – Nearly all Mediclaim policies do not cover the costs of plastic surgery for cosmetic needs. However, plastic surgery following an injury or accident is generally covered. Cosmetic dental treatments are also excluded from the coverage.
  • Injuries due to suicide attempts – Any injuries arising from suicide attempts or self-harm are not covered by Mediclaim policies.
  • Alternative Therapies – The costs of alternative therapies like Unani, Naturopathy, Ayurveda, magnetic therapy, acupressure are not generally included.
  • Several health plans do not offer coverage for maternity and child-birth related expenses unless the policyholder has taken the rider for it.
  • Injuries due to HIV, war, nuclear attacks are not generally covered.

Note that the exclusions vary from one policy to another. So, make sure to read the terms and conditions mentioned on the policy prospectus carefully before taking a Mediclaim policy.
