A pre-existing disease (PED) is an ailment, medical condition, or injury that the policyholder has before/during the time of purchasing a health insurance plan. Most insurance policies come with a waiting period. The insured can file a claim for PEDs only after the initial waiting period is over. The initial waiting time varies from policy to policy. The maximum waiting period for PEDs is four years.

Various lifestyle diseases like high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, and thyroid are classified as pre-existing diseases. Here are a few points to keep in mind regarding PEDs while purchasing a health plan:

  • Do not hide a pre-existing disease – Hiding any health issues could give you huge trouble later on, especially when filing claims. It could even cause the insurer to reject your claims.
  • Minor and seasonal ailments are not PEDs – Seasonal and short-term conditions like cold, cough, and flu are not considered pre-existing diseases. Only long-term illnesses that impact your health, in the long run, are regarded as PEDs. For the complete list of PEDs, refer to the policy prospectus.
  • Be Aware of the Waiting Period – The initial waiting period for pre-existing diseases vary based on the insurance provider and your medical condition. So, make sure to check the initial waiting period for PEDs before purchasing a health plan.

Even if you have a pre-existing medical condition, you can still take a health plan. Be mindful of the terms and conditions, and choose the right policy that best fits your medical needs.
