What Is Challan 280? How To Use Challan 280 To Pay Tax?

Challan 280 is a deposit form used to pay income tax; it can be used to make payment both online and offline. It is primarily used to pay Advance tax, Self-Assessment tax, Tax on Regular Assessment, Surtax, Tax on Distributed Profits of Domestic Company and Tax on Distributed income to unit holders.

This form is available on the official NSDL e-gov website. Taxpayers can either download the form, fill it up, and make payment offline or fill it online itself and e-pay the taxes through your netbanking or debit card. It is a very simple form, user friendly, and allows convenient payment of taxes.

E-Payment Of Tax Using Challan 280

  • Login to the official NSDL E-Gov website and select Challan 280 from the homepage.
  • Enter your PAN / TAN, as applicable, and choose the applicable tax, form of payment, nature of payment, and assessment/financial year from the options provided on the screen.
  • Aside from the aforementioned information, you must also submit your address information (such as City, Pin Code, State etc.).
  • The taxpayer will have two payment options: Net Banking or a debit card from the specified bank. The taxpayer has the option of selecting one of the different payment methods.
  • After entering the following information and selecting the correct bank, you will be prompted to input the text (CAPTCHA) as shown on the screen. When the CAPTCHA text is successfully matched, click the 'Proceed' button. The confirmation screen appears.
  • Non-financial/financial details supplied by you on the first screen, as well as the taxpayer name from the Income Tax Department's database, will be presented on the confirmation screen.
  • You can make the tax payment after you validate the accuracy of the information displayed.
  • You will be taken to the bank's payment gateway, i.e. the Debit Card /Net Banking web page, on the next screen. You must log in to the net-banking site using the User ID/password issued by the bank for net-banking. Enter the necessary card information for the Debit Card option.
  • After a successful payment, a challan counterfoil with the CIN (Challan Identification Number), payment details, and bank name from whence the e-payment was made will be shown. This counterfoil serves as proof of payment.

How To Pay Tax Offline Using Challan 280?

The IT department allows taxpayers to pay tax at numerous authorized banks for the ease of taxpayers. One can download the unfilled Challan 280 form from the NSDL website, fill it up with correct details, and submit it at any of the authorized banks to pay the taxes. Let’s see how.

  • Login to the official NSDL E-Gov website and click on ‘Downloads’ on the homepage.
  • Download the ‘ITNS 280’ challan file. It is downloaded in PDF format. Take a print out of this. It looks like this –

Challan Status Enquiry & Change Requests

After paying the tax with challan 280, taxpayers can check the status of their challans online. They can reassure themselves that their tax payment has been properly accounted for in their name by using this facility. This function can also be used by collecting banks to inquire about the status of challans that they have uploaded.

They are two search options for the taxpayers –

  • CIN Based View – Under this view, upon entering the CIN number, the assessee can verify details pertaining to their BSR Code, Date of Deposit, Challan Serial Number, Major Head Code with description, TAN/PAN, Name of Taxpayer, challan received date, confirm if the amount entered is correct
  • TAN Based View – Under this view, one can view the CIN, Major Head Code with description, Minor Head Code, Nature of Payment

If the taxpayer finds any errors or omissions, they can get those rectified.

For offline payments made through banks, taxpayers can contact the bank within 7 days of challan payment to get the details rectified.

For online payments, the taxpayer needs to contact the respective AO (Assessing Officer) to make the changes.

Challan 280 is used to pay self-assessment tax. You can pay online by visiting the NSDL e-gov website. Soft copies of these challans are available for download at the NSDL e-Gov -TIN website and the Income Tax Department website for offline use. Challans can also be obtained at your local income tax offices too.

2. What is Challan Identification Number (CIN) and what is its relevance?

The acknowledgement receipt bears a Challan Identification Number (CIN) that uniquely identifies the tax payment. As proof of payment, CIN must be included in the income tax return. Any subsequent inquiries must also include the CIN.

3. Is it allowed to deposit multiple challans with a single cheque?

No, you must deposit a separate check for each challan.
