The Employees' Provident Fund or EPF passbook contains details about all the transactions that have been made in the Employees Pension Scheme (EPS) accounts by both the employer and the employee. The passbook contains a list of all the monthly donations, the interest that has been accrued, and the interest that is currently being accrued on the amount collected. This passbook is available online for downloading and reviewing in PDF format. However, you must complete the registration of your Universal Account Number (UAN) on the Employees’ Provident Fund Organization’s (EPFO) official website. You can access this passbook only after six hours of registering on the EPFO portal. However, this passbook can be accessed if you have already settled with an employer or your account is not functioning properly anymore.

How To Login into EPF Passbook?

Register on the EPFO portal and login to view the EPF passbook. Here are the steps to register on the EPFO portal

Step 1: Go to the official EPFO portal and then go to the ‘Our Services’ section.

Step 2: Click the ‘For Employees’ option under the ‘Our Services’ section

Step 3: Scroll down to locate the ‘Member UAN/Online Services’ and click on it. You will be forwarded to the UAN member e-Sewa portal.

Step 4: Hit ‘Activate UAN’ to complete registering on the EPFO portal.

Step 5: Input your Aadhaar, PAN, UAN number, email ID, mobile number, and other details.

Step 6: After filling in all these details and submitting them, a PIN will be sent to your registered mobile number.

Step 7: Enter the PIN and validate the entered details.

Step 8: You can log in to the EPFO portal since you are now successfully registered.

Things To Keep in Mind Before Downloading The EPFO Passbook

  • The EPFO passbook will be available for download only if the registration on the UAN portal has been completed.
  • The passbook facility will be available only 6 hours after the registration or activation has been completed.
  • Settled members, inoperative members, and exempted establishment members will not be able to access the EPF passbook facility.
  • The entries which are made on the passbook must be compatible with the ones made by the EPFO field offices.

Step by Step Guide To View and Download The EPF Passbook Through the EPFO Website

Step 1: Visit the official portal of EPFO Website at https://www.epfindia.gov.in/site_en/index.php.

Step 2: Then, click the ‘e-Passbook’ option.

Step 3: Enter the details like UAN, password, and captcha code.

Step 4: Then, click on ‘Login

Step 5: You will be forwarded to the next page. Here, the member ID will be displayed on the screen. If you have multiple member IDs, all of them will be displayed on the screen.

Step 6: You must now click on the Member ID of which you want to download the PF statement.

Step 7: Your company name, your name (employee name), the office address, the percentage ownership for the employer and you (employee), and the contribution made to the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) will all be shown once you click on the member ID.

Step 8: You can also download the PDF version of the passbook and take a printout.

How to Download EPF Member Passbook through UMANG Application

You can also get EPFO services on the UMANG app which can be downloaded from the Google Play store or app store. Expansion of UMANG is the Unified Mobile App for New Governance. Here are the steps to download the UAN passbook through the UMANG app

Step 1: Download the UMANG appfrom the App Store or Google Play Store

Step 2: Under the ‘All Services’ tab, choose the “EPFO” option

Step 3: Go to ‘Employee Centric Service’ and click on ‘View Passbook’ under it.

Step 4: Input your UAN number and click on ‘Get OTP

Step 5: Enter the OTP obtained on your mobile and click ‘Submit’

Step 6: Click the EPF Member ID for which you are going to download the EPF passbook.

Step 7: The passbook will be shown on the screen.

Step 8: Click the ‘Download’ button to download the UAN passbook.

Steps To Check The UAN Status

The steps to check the UAN status are mentioned below:

Step 1: Under ‘Services’, visit the EPFO portal. Click on ‘For Employees’.

Step 2: Click on ‘UAN Online Services’ (OCS/OTCP).

Step 3: Click on the ‘Know your UAN Status’ link

Step 4: Enter either your PF number, member ID, Aadhaar number, or PAN. You may also have to enter other essential information such as your date of birth and mobile number

Step 5: Click to receive 'Get Authorization PIN'.

Step 6: You will now receive a verification PIN on your registered mobile number. Input the OTP and click on ‘Validate OTP and get UAN’.

Step 7: Post this, you will receive the UAN number and its status.

How is your EPF Passbook Updated?

The EPF passbook is updated immediately after the employer or the employee makes a contribution. However, only the year and month of the contribution are entered and not the date. If you do not find the passbook updated, then log into the portal again after a few days and get the updated passbook.

What is The Pension Contribution in the EPF Passbook?

Both the employer and the employee will give 12% each to the EPF account. 8.33% of the employer’s contribution, up to a threshold value of Rs. 15,000 will be added to the EPS. The remaining amount will be contributed towards the EPF. EPF is compulsory for all individuals with a monthly income below Rs. 15,000.

Other Ways To Check Your EPFO Passbook Account Balance

Apart from the official EPFO website, you can also check your EPFO passbook account balance through the following ways:

1. Through SMS

  • The EPF account balance can be verified by sending an SMS to 7738299899 from the registered mobile number.
  • The SMS format is ‘EPFOHO UAN ENG’, where ENG is the first three characters of the language you prefer
  • There are around 10 vernacular languages in which the SMS can be sent. They include English, Hindi, Telugu, Punjabi, Gujarati, Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Marathi, and Bengali.
  • If your Aadhaar, PAN, and bank account were provided by the employer and were not digitally approved, there is a chance that you may not get a message.
  • In such cases, you must contact your employer immediately. Post resolving this issue, you will get an SMS from EPFO, giving the information about KYC documents, the last contribution made, and the balance in the account.

2. Through Missed Call

To use the missed call facility, the account holder must verify that the UAN number has been linked to the KYC details. When the KYC has been successfully linked, you can give a missed call to 011-22901406 from your registered mobile number. An SMS consisting the details of the EPFO will soon be sent.

1. How can I check my EPF passbook on my phone?

Download the UMANG app on your phone from the Google Play Store if it is an Android phone or from the Apple Play Store if you are an iPhone user. Then, on the app, select ‘EPFO’. Then click on the option ‘Employee Centric Service’. In the subsequent step, enter your UAN number. After this, a One-Time Password (OTP) will be sent to your registered mobile number.
