Introduction

As per the Union Government’s Direct Benefit Transfer Scheme, consumers are eligible to get 12 cylinders per year at a subsidised rate. The consumer pays the full amount upfront to the distributor and then receives the subsidy in his/her bank account.

In order to receive the subsidy in your bank account, your LPG connection must be linked to your Aadhaar number. Aadhaar number, serving as a unique identification number, weeds out duplicate connections, thus making sure that the subsidy reaches all eligible beneficiaries.

There are various ways to link your Aadhaar with your LPG connection. Let us have a look at the steps that need to be followed to link your Aadhaar and LPG.

PAHAL - Direct Benefits Transfer for LPG(DBTL) Consumers Scheme

LPG prices are highly regularized in India. The government spends a huge amount towards subsidies for gas cylinders used for domestic purposes. However, for many years, this subsidy amount was being directly given to the gas companies who did not pass on the benefit entirely to the consumers. To put an end to this, the government decided to pay the subsidy directly to the consumers. Thus was born the DBTL scheme.

In this scheme, the consumers are given 12 cylinders per year at the subsidized rate. They pay the full price of the cylinder to the distributor and later receive the subsidy amount in their bank account. This was a massive exercise that was carried out throughout the country. It led to the weeding out of lakhs of duplicate connections. This scheme ensured that the benefits were being passed on to eligible beneficiaries. This scheme is called PAHAL.

For the consumers to receive this benefit under PAHAL, they have to link their Aadhaar number with their LPG connection. This ensures that the subsidy amount is directly credited to the bank account linked with the Aadhaar number.

How will I receive my subsidy if I don’t have an Aadhaar number?

If an LPG consumer doesn't have an Aadhaar number, he can still get the subsidy directly into his bank account without using Aadhaar number. This process was implemented in the revamped scheme to ensure that LPG subsidies are not denied to any LPG user due to lack of Aadhaar number.

Under this process, the consumers can either

Submit their bank account details (bank account holder name / account number / IFSC code) to the LPG distributor to be updated on the LPG database

OR

Submit their current LPG customer information, along with the 17 digit LPG user ID, to the bank.
